Orchard Park Central School District Adeline Prasad, Lola Whipple, Class of 2016 Graduation Ceremony Zoe Aylsworth Alexie Zeigler, Eggert Elementary South Davis Elementary South Davis Elemntary Orchard Park High School Community Report June/July 2016 Orchard Park Central School District Digs into Capital Project The Orchard Park Central School District held a groundbreak- ing ceremony the morning of Wednesday, May 11, 2016 to cele- brate the beginning of the Capital Project work. The ceremony was attended by school district officials, board members and associates from both Turner Construction Compa- ny and Gordon Jones Associates. Orchard Park Central School District residents approved the project at a vote held on December 1, 2014. Voters approved both propositions listed on the December 1st ballot. Proposition 1 was a District-Wide Health and Safety Capital Improvements Project and Proposition 2 was the Middle School Auditorium renovation. Since the groundbreaking, work has begun all over the district. At the Orchard Park High School, work is starting with the athletic fields. Later this summer, they will begin replacing the origninal single pane windows from 1959. At the Middle School they are Ground was broken on the Capital Project in May. Ellicott Elementary Dr. Sol Messigner Visits Orchard Park Middle School Dr. Sol Messigner visited eighth grade students at the Orchard Park Middle School this Spring. He spoke to students about his perspective as a child during the Holocaust and the experience that his family faced. A few eighth grade students had the opportunity to meet with him at a reception in the Middle School library after he spoke. This visit was made possible by the Holocaust Resource Center of Buffalo. The Orchard Park Middle School PTO was able to make a donation to the Holocaust Resource Center as a thank you for giving our students such an amazing experience. Dr. Sol Messigner, second from the left, is pictured with eighth grade students and Middle School Social Studies teachers after his presentation. 2 OPHS Seniors Sign National Letters of Intent Six Orchard Park High School seniors recently signed their national letters of intent to play their sports at the college level. The seniors signed their letters at signing ceremonies at the Orchard Park High School on Tuesday, June 14th and Tuesday June 21st. Daniel Freilicher plans to play tennis at Nazareth College next year. Daniel has been playing tennis since he was 10 years old. Daniel loves the difficulty and precision in the sport. He is looking forward to attending Nazareth and he feels it will be a great fit for him and his academic and social endeavors. Daniel will also be playing basketball at Nazareth next year. Brady Jensen plans to run track next year at St. John Fisher College. He has been participating in outdoor track since seventh grade and indoor track since his sophomore year of high school. Jason began playing volleyball when he was 12 years old. He is looking forward to working together with his team, coaches and trainers at Arcadia University. Jason plans to study Biology with a concentration in biomedical engineering next year. Matthew Mercer will be running cross country and track at the University at Buffalo next year. He began running in 7th grade to follow in the footsteps of his older siblings. Alexsander Micov will be playing football at Buffalo State next year. Alexsander has been playing football since sophomore year of high school at Orchard Park. He wanted to continue to play football in college because he feels it has become an important part of his life and it’s something he would like to continue doing. Alexsander chose to play at Buffalo State because they have a great football organization and an intelligent coaching staff. He plans to major in an engineering program and hopefully become a DEC officer in the future. Alexie Zeigler is planning to attend Oswego next year. She has been running track since seventh grade. She chose to continue running in college because she can’t imagine not being able to run anymore. Alexie plans to study Biology on a Pre-Veterinary track. and she hopes to be a Veterinarian in the future. Author Carolyn Crimi Visits Windom Elementary Windom Elementary hosted author Carolyn Crimi on Wednesday, April 20th and Thursday, April 21st. She presented to all grade levels at Windom. In her informative and engaging session, Carolyn took the students on a journey demonstrating how she gets ideas for her books and the process of publishing a book. The students had an opportunity to meet Carolyn and ask her questions. Carolyn is an award winning author who has published over a dozen children’s books. In addition to creating her own books, Carolyn writes for children’s textbooks and magazines, and visits schools all over the country to share her experiences with students. Her humorous outlook on life is often depicted in her books. As she explains on her website, “I write about things that make me laugh, or about things I loved when I was young.” This exciting and interactive presentation was made possible for students through the combined efforts of the Author Carolyn Crimi presents to Windom Elementary School PTO, Principal Wendy Gloss, faculty, staff, Orchard Park Foundation for students at Windom Elementary.
