species by monotypy Laiochochlis [sic] poinmeraniae Dunker & Metzger, 1874 (a
juniorsubjectivesynonymofCerithiumsinistratumNyst, 1835),isherebyplacedon
theOfficial ListofGenericNamesinZoology.
(3) The name sinistratum Nyst, 1835, as published in the binomen Cerithium
sinistratum (senior subjective synonym of the specific name of Laiochochlis [sic]
pommeraniae Dunker & Metzger, 1874, the type species ofLaeocochlis Dunker &
Metzger,1874),andasdefinedbytheneotypedesignatedbyGilbert(1958),ishereby
placedon theOfficial ListofSpecificNamesinZoology.

Dunker& Metzger, 1874, are hereby placedon theOfficial Index ofRejected and
Invalid Generic Names in Zoology (incorrect spellings ofLaeocochlis Dunker &
Metzger, 1874).

correctspellingofthegenericnamewasreceivedfromMrDavidHeppell{National
MuseumsofScotland. Edinburgh. U.K.) on 6April 1990. Aftercorrespondencethe
casewaspublishedin BZN48:27-30(March 1991). Noticeofthecasewassentto
appropriatejournals.
A comment from Drs Philippe Bouchet {Museum Nationald'HistoireNaturelle,
Paris. France)andAndersWaren(NaturhistoriskaRiksmuseet. Stockholm, Sweden),
publishedinBZN48: 322-323(December 1991),pointedoutthatthespecificname
ofCerithiumsinistratumNyst, 1835wasthatvalidforthetypespeciesofthegenus
(L.pommeraniaeDunker&Metzger, 1874),andthatsinistratumwasdefinedbythe
neotypedesignatedbyGilbert(1958).TheynotedthatboththespellingsLaiochochlis
andLaiocochlishadhadusageandconsideredthatconservationofLaiocochliswould
bestservenomenclaturalstability.
AreplybyMrHeppell,publishedinBZN49:70(March1992),consideredthatthe
Commission should be asked first to rule that Laiochochlisand Laeochochliswere
incorrect spellings, and then to determine the correct spelling ofthe generic name
{LaeocochlisorLaiocochlis)byasimplemajority.Thelatterspellingshadappeared
inthesamepublication(Dunker&Metzger, 1874b).
The suppression ofthe earliest spelling Laiochochlis Dunker & Metzger, 1874a,
whichhadhadlittleuse,hadbeenadvocatedbothbyHeppell(BZN48:27-30;49:
70)andbyBouchet&Waren(BZN48:322-323).Thiswasgivenonthevotingpapers
as Proposal A. Proposals B and C differed only in the choice between the two
spellingsLaeocochlisand Laiocochlis,bothofDunker& Metzger, 1874b(thethird

spellingtherein, Laeochochlis, hadnotbeenused). Proposal BwasthatofHeppell
(BZN 48: 28-29 with amendments; BZN 49: 70), Proposal C that ofBouchet &
