(3) The name cubensis Stebbing, 1897, as published in the binomen Lysianax cubensis (specific name ofthe type species ofShoemakerella Pirlot, 1936), is hereby placedontheOfficial ListofSpecificNamesinZoology. HistoryofCase2711 An application for the designation of Lysianax cubensis Stebbing, 1897 as the type species of Shoemakerella Pirlot, 1936 was received from Drs J.K. Lowry & H.E. Stoddart (Australian Museum, Sydney South, Australia) on 21 February 1989. After correspondence the case was pubhshed in BZN 46: 236-238 (December 1989). Noticeofthecasewassenttoappropriatejournals. Commentsin support from Drs Richard C. Brusca (NaturalHistory Museum. San Diego, California, U.S.A.) and Michael H. Thurston (Institute of Oceanographic Sciences, Godalming, Surrey, U.K.)werepublishedin BZN47: 213 (September 1990), togetherwithanoteofafurthercommentinsupportfromProfKrzysztofJazdzewski (UniwersytetLodzki,Lodz,Poland). A further supportive comment was received from ProfMichael F. Gable (Eastern ConnecticutState University, Willimantic Connecticut, U.S.A.),writingalsoonbehalf , ofDrEricLazo-Wasem(PeabodyMuseum, Yale University, f/.S.yi.).ProfGablenoted that a recent discovery ofseveral ofDana's amphipod type specimens from the U.S. ExploringExpedition(1838-1842)inthePeabodyMuseumdidnotincludeLysianassa nasuta Dana, 1853, corroboratingpara. 4 ofthe application. ProfGable also wrote: 'Ourworkon thelysianassidsin Bermuda stronglyagreeswith theevidencestated by Lowry & Stoddart that L. nasuta does not fit Pirlot's concept ofShoemakerella. It is evidenttousthatonlybyconsideringPirlot'sdescriptiono{Shoemakerellatobebased onLysianaxcubensisStebbing, 1897canthehistoricalevidenceandcurrentfindingson these amphipods be in harmony and be correct. We believe that Shoemakerella is indeed a valid genus and we support wholeheartedly Lowry & Stoddart's proposed designationofLysianaxcubensisasthetypespecies'.
