we do it? That is another question which we can only answer, each of us, for ourselves. If we are not brave enough or interested enough for the first alternative, the second is to withdraw from the NCCC. It no longer represents American religious direction any more than other avenues. More people hear a single TV evangelist than hear the pronouncements of the entire NCCC. No longer will we be in isolation from the American mainstream by not being in the NCCC. No more do we need it, as an immigrant Church of "funny" sounds and smells, to buy ourselves American credentials. If combined with some coherent plan through SCOBA or whatever to make ourselves understood on the American scene, withdrawal from membership in the NCCC in favor of a more visible Orthodox structure would be a very positive step. The third alternative, of course, is the current state of events. It is the intolerable dilemma which no doubt led to the Greek Archdiocese’s action. This consists of a weak participation in NCCC with little impact on its direction. The statements of Bailey are ample evidence alone of the ineffectiveness of Orthodoxy now in the NCCC. Of the first two alternatives, the former clearly accomplishes the transformation of America - and it is nothing less than this that we are called to do. But if we are too weak in the Spirit to do that, we can at least do the second alternative.
