Abstract The systematic status of Mlxctzrgtass upmalauensi sMatsumura was discusse dand it
was considered to be a synonym of M. sylvia Boisduval.

Mdcrqglossum palauensis Matsumura, I930 : 120, fig .2 ; id ,1931 : 605, fig.
Although in the original descriptio Mnatsumura writes, "Hab.-Palaa ; one male specimen
was collected by Mr. S. Uchiyama.", there are two female sidentifi easd palauengis by him
preserved in the Laboratory of Systemati cEntomology, Hokkaido Universit yS,apporo.

The next year he writes, "This species is common on Palau, southern Pacifi c[i nJapanese ].",
probably based on the two specimens. Unfbrtunatel ythe two female sare not the same
species. As shown in the picture hsere ,we cannotjudge which ofthem is the holotype from
the original descrjpt iaondn from the label sattached to the specimens. One is nearly perfect,
but the other is rather worn and the hindwings are broken. Iwill here choose the former
as the holotype ofpalauensts, which is identic awlith lt` s[ytvi aBoisduva l(sy nn.ov.). The
other specimen is identic wailth Ml cof:ythus Walker in it sfemale genitali ase,emingty most
close to subsp. pylene Felder, but the corroct status of the subspecies is not decided , The

パ ラウホ ウジャ ク （ス ズメガ科）につ い て （井上　寛）
南．太平洋のパ ラウ島で とれた単一の雄によっ て新種として記載された Macroglossum 　palauensis　Matsu−
mura パ ラウホウ ジャ クの原標本とお もわれ る もの を調べ てみ る と， 北海道大学には， 著者自身に
よっ て palauensisと同定された 2頭の雌があっ て，どちらが完模式標本なのか， 原記載か らもラベ ル
か らも判断がつ か ない．本文で は，よ り状態の 良 い 方の標本をholotypeとさだめ たが これ は M ．
，
sylvia 　Boisduva1 の シノニ ムで あることが ゲニ タリア を比べ る ことに よっ て 判明した，もう 1頭の不完
全な雌は M ．corythzas 　Walker オ キナワクロ ホ ウジャ ク と一致した．原記載でただ 1頭の 雄 （実は雌の
まちがい）としか述べ られてい ない ので，後の標本は paratype とはならない ．
