In 1872 the Swiss malacologist Johann RudolfAlbert Mousson named some very large helicidsnails basedonsubfossil shells collectedby theGermangeologist Karl von Fritsch onhisexcursions across the islandofLa Gomera, Canary Island(Fritsch, 1867; Mousson, 1872). One ofthese, Hemicycla efferata(Mousson, 1872),was recently discov- ered alive and its wider former distribution couldbe established (Hutterer et al., in press). Another taxon,Helix(Leptaxis) digna Mousson, 1872,was basedona single fossil shellwhich, according to acryptic note inMousson (1872: 162) and the text scribbled onto the label of the holotype, had been taken near Agulo, a small village on the northern coast of the island. Our multiple attempts to find more ofthese very large, keeled and ribbed shells (fig. 1) have been unsuccessful for a long time, and there remainslittlereason to believethatthisbeautifulsnail has survived. However, during a botanical excursion thejunior author collected a few shells in a remote part ofLa Gomera which seem to represent Mousson's taxon, and which therefore are the first new examples besides the holotype collected 120 years ago. Moreover, the senior authors'unsuccessfulattemptsyielded shellsofasmallerbutsuperficially similarspecies in Pleistocene/Holocene deposits in a valley further west. Diagnosis. — Helicid from the Canary Islands, with a very large flattened shell, a keeled periphery, a suture with strong overlap and a strongly ribbed and granulated surface. Description. — The narrow umbilicus ofthe moderately thick and opaque shell is almost completely covered bythecolumellarpartoftheperistome. Theform ofthe shell is depressed conical, the numberofregularly, rapidly increasing whorls variesbetween 4.1 and 4.3. Thewhorlsareseparated by acharacteristicsuture: theouter margin ofthe whorls forms a flat crest which slightly overlaps the next whorl. The periphery of the body whorlis thereforenotonly keeled,butformsasmallcrest in theupper thirdofthe whorl(see Mousson,1872:pi. 4 fig.3, and figs. 1-2).Thecrestedkeelbecomesmore and more reduced towards the aperture. The body whorl descends significantly in itslast tenth towards the peristome, resulting in an inclinationofapproximately 50 degrees between theplane ofthe apertureand the verticalaxis oftheholotype shell, butless so inthe othershells. The sculpture ofthe teleoconchis dominatedby numerousoblique- radialribs (approximately 8percm in theperiphery ofthelast whorl)which sometimes branch close to the periphery. Ribs and interspace are covered by fine granulations which are eitherround oroval (fig. 2). Theprotoconch (3.7 mmin diametre) embraces 1.4whorlsandis finely striateand granulate. Thetransverse-ovate aperture isangulate at itsperiphery. The slightly reflectedperistome forms anarrow, littlecallous lip. The columellar-palatal region bearsan inconspicous callosity betweenthe separated endsof the lip which isbest developed overthe umbilicus. Shells fromthe new locality, which is separated from the typelocality Agulo by four steep valleys, are generally larger and flatter(table 1). The ribs are more pronounced, particularly onthe underside of the shell. The shell ofthe holotype (fig. 1), although smaller, is also thicker and heavier; this is illustratedby the weight ofthe dry shell, which is 2.55 gin the holotype but only 1.22and 1.78 intwo complete shells from the new locality. Measurementsin mm. Holotype: width 33.36,height 19.06,aperturewidth20.65, aperture maximumheight 16.95;numberofwhorlsoftheembryonic shell 1.4, number ofwhorlsofthe entire shell4.2. For further measurements see table 1. Remarks. — The new sample clearly shows that a species with the characters of Mousson's Helixdigna oncelived onLa Gomeraisland. The species is only known from two localities(fig. 3).Compared to theholotype, thenew shellsare flatterwith asharper keel andstrongerribs. However,we donotknow thetemporal relationships betweenthe two fossillocalities, andweascribe this differencetogeographical ortemporal variation. These shells, which represent the second largest helicidofthe entire archipelago, are very similar to shells ofthe keeled ecotype of Iberus gualterianus (L., 1758) from south- eastern Spain. Lopez-Alcantara et al. (1983, 1985) documented a complete set of intergrades between keeled and strongly ornamentedshells and unkeeledand smooth shells.Thekeeledecotype is only foundinkarstic areaswithahotand dryclimate.Ifwe apply this modelto H. digna,then the flatterand strongly keeledmorph mayhave lived in a dry period such as aninterpluvial. However, thismust remain speculative because we havenodataonthe ageofboth theold andnewfossillocalities.Thenewshellswere accidently foundonasteep slope where they werewashed outby erosion. Sedimentin oneofthe shells containedatiny shell of Vitrea sp., possibly Vitreasubvitreola(Bourgui- gnat, 1880) which isknown fromNorth Africa(see Pinter, 1969). The report ofFritsch (1867) onhis activities in La Gomera doesnot provide much informationonthe fossil site in the valley ofAgulo. He only remarked (1867, p. 18) that, "In denreichlichen Ansammlungen von Gebirgsschutt und Thalgeroll der zumTheilanihremUrsprunge kesselartigen Thaler des Nordostens von Gomera liegen zahlreiche, zum Theil sub- fossile Gehause von grossen Helix-Arten und dergleichen." However, the smallerbut heavierandstoutershelloftheholotype, aswellas themineraldendritescovering it(fig. 1),indicate that the conditionsofthe Agulo deposit were different. Mousson (1872) regarded H. digna as amember of the subgenus Leptaxis and partic- ularly as a relative ofLeptaxis wollastoni (Lowe, 1852). As a second species ofCanarian Leptaxis he listedL. cuticula(Shuttleworth, 1852) which is currently placed in the genus Guerrina (Valido et al., 1993). YVollaston (1878) commented on the same species: "Detected byFritsch, inasubfossil state ... aspecies ofpeculiar interestgeographically as belonging to muchthesametypeas thePorto-SantanH. WollastoniLowe, andforensis, Woll., from the Madeiran Group, and the MediterraneanH.scabriuscula, Desh. It appears however to be considerably larger than the H. Wollastoni.” Odhner (1931) recognized similaritiesin theinternalanatomyandshell morphologybetween Hemicycla and Levantina, Isaurica, Codringtonia, and other genera, a hypothesis which has not yet been tested. Indeed, the shell ofH. digna is rather similar to the shell ofLevantina tripolitana (Wood, 1828)(figured by Subai, 1994: pi. 1 fig. 2). However, the dart of Levantinais curved, whileit is straight in theHemicycla species so farstudied(see below). The newshellsshow a stronggranulation which is found in manyHemicycla species. We include dignain thegenus because it contains anumberoftaxa with keeledand/or ribbed and granulate shells, such as H. berkeleyi (Lowe, 1861) and H. planorbella (Lamarck, 1822). The overlapping ofthe suture, which apparently led Mousson (1872) to place his new species in Leptaxis, is found in many other genera such as Pomatias, Guerrina, Geomitra, Eremina,Sphincterochila or Theba, and thereforecertainly is aconver- gentcharacter. However, thischaracterisnot commonwithin thegenusHemicycla andis 120 BASTERIA, Vol.59,No. 4-6, 1996 unique among the species known from La Gomera. We therefore regard H. digna asa species with no close relationship to any of the living or fossil congeners from La Gomera. The following new species, whichwediscovered in searchofH. digna, resem- bles it only superficially by itslarge size anda weak keel. Hemicycla migueli Groh & Hutterer sp. n. figs. 4, 6 Material.— (74 shells, 3 dartfragments): La Gomera,Vallehermoso,road toplaya c. 1 km below village (28RBS7820),fossil slope deposits at 100m,31.12.1987, K. & C. Groh leg. (AIT/5, BMNH/2, CGH/17, CHB/5, TFMC/2, MNHN/2, SMF/2), same locality, R. Hutterer & M. Ibanez leg. 04.02.1994 (holotype SMF 311142, ZMZ/2, NMB/2, NNM 57137/2,CVB/1, CHB/11 +3 dart fragments); Vallehermosovillage, old road atfoot ofLomo San Pedro(28RBS7719), fossilbeds, 07.02.1994,R. Diagnosis. — Shell resembling that ofH. granomalleata (Wollaston, 1878) from La Palma but larger, more depressed, and surface less malleate. Description. Shell imperforate, solidandopaque,ofa depressed-conical formwith 4.1 (3.9 to 4.3) rapidly increasing whorlsand withalinear, strongly marked suture(fig. 4). Traces ofcolourin anumberofshells suggestthatthe shellwas brownishwith three darker spiral bands, a narrow and a broad one above and a narrow one below the significantly angledto keeled periphery. Thisangulation orkeel is situated atthe upper thirdofthe whorlsstretching towards thelastthirdofthe body-whorl whereit becomes roundedorslightly acute.Thelast6 to 8 mm oftheultimatewhorldescendabruptly to the peristome, resulting in aninclinationofabout 70 degrees between theplane ofthe apertureandthevertical axis oftheshell. The sculpture ofthe teleoconchis dominated by numerous fine oblique-radial riblets (approximately 3 per mm in the last whorl) which may become irregularly undulated towards the periphery, forming flat mallea- tions. The large protoconch (approximately 3.7 mm in diameter) is littlechagrinated, lighter than the teleoconch, and embraces 1.1 (0.9 to 1.3) whorls. The oblique pear- shaped aperture hasa strongperistome which isthickened atthebase to anup to3 mm wide ridge. The outlineis little angulated at the upper outer corner. The narrow lip (width c. 1.3 mm) is little reflected and interiorly thickened by a callosity. Also, the columellar and parietal parts of the aperture bear a callus, stretching between the insertions ofthe apertural margins and being most massive above the umbilicusand nearthe columella. Fragments ofthree darts (fig. 6) resemble the dart ofotherHemicycla species, such as H. bidentalis(Lamarck, 1822), H. gaudryi (Orbigny, 1839), H.saulcyi (Orbigny, 1839) (Groh, 1985;Grohet al. 1992),orH. efferata(Mousson, 1872)(Hutterer et al., in press), butare moresimilar to thatofHemicycla ‘moussoniana’ whichalso hasaslightly asymmet- rical blade(figured in Groh, 1985:411). Thelength ofthedart ofmigueli sp. n. without theproximal partofthecrownis5.5 mm,which issmallerthan in‘moussoniana’(= sp. n., Huttereret al., in press). Measurementsin mm. Insize andshape, only Hemicycla gomerensis (Morelet, 1864), known only by the type seriesin the ParisMuseum, is somewhat similar.However,the shellofthe lectotype (designated by K. Groh in 1985) is much smaller(width 20.9mm) and more depressed (height 12.8 mm), and the number ofwhorls (3.4) is lower. However, it is distinguished by a strong malleationofthe shell surface, by a broader lip and a much denser punctation ofthe embryonic shell.The numberofwhorls isalso lower (3.4) than in H. migueli sp. n., and the entire shell is more globose. Shells ofanunnamedpopulation oftheyet unrevised groupofHemicycla consobrina (Ferussac, 1821) from the Teno mountains,Tenerife, are alsosomewhatsimilar. In these, thelastwhorlis only angled, the shellsurfaceexhibits a strong malleationandthe embryonal shell is nearly smooth. Discussion. — Our field work suggests that the new species had a very limited distributionin the northofLa Gomera during the Quaternary (fig. 3) and that it is extinct. The age ofthe deposits is difficult to estimate and mayalso vary between the four localities. Shells atthe type locality are wellpreserved, sometimes glossy and with traces ofcolour, and suggestthat thisslope deposit has ayounger, probably Holocene age.The fossil bedsat the footofLomo SanPedromay have anolder age.Webelieve that Mousson (1872: 160) refered to these beds when writing that, "L'ile de Gomera presentedans le Val hermosades couches de debris et de galets tres remarquables par leur fossiles. Les couches, que le ruisseau de la vallee a creusees sur 2 a 3 metres de profondeur, semblent d'uneepoque relativement assezancienne."In thisplace thick sedimentpackages are cutby theactualbrookformingsteep sectionsofa heightofupto 10 m. A weak stratification can be observed; shells, however, occur in the entire sediment.We conclude that these deposits are remnants ofthe bottom ofanancient valley ofanolderage thanthepresentbarranco. Ifwe assumethatthepresentbarranco was formed during the lastpluvial, thenthe age ofthe fossil bedsmay beestimatedas Pleistocene. The mollusc faunain thelatterbedsincludes 13 species. BesidesHemicycla migueli sp. n. these are:Pomatias aff. laevigatus (Webb & Berthelot, 1833), Truncatellina atomus (Shuttleworth, 1852), Leiostyla taeniata (Shuttleworth, 1852), Napaeus consecoanus(Mous- son, 1872), Napaeus sp. n., Vitrea sp.,Gibbulinella dealbata (Webb & Berthelot, 1833), Canariellasp. n., Hemicycla efferata (Mousson, 1872), Hemicyclafritschi (Mousson, 1872), Hemicycla sp. n.,and Caracollinalenticula(Ferussac, 1821).ThegenusLeiostyla isrecorded forthe first timefrom La Gomera. As far as we know, the habitatrequirements ofthe livingspecies (except for H. miguelisp. n.,Leiostyla, Truncatellina,and Vitreawehavefound all species alive in otherplaces ontheisland), mostrequire a microclimatewith ahigh humidity. Someofthem are restrictedto laurelforest, a habitatwhich today exists at some 300 meters ofaltitudeabovethefossilbeds. TheextinctionofH. migueli sp. n.was probably due to the declineofthe forest after the last pluvial period.
