Contributors know Graham in many contexts-as fellow scholar, as colleague, as teacher, as supervisor and, unanimously, as friend. He is a leading Old Testa ment expert who has deservedly reached the top of his field. A lasting focus of his work has been the combination of sources that he has util ized in the interpretation of the biblical text. His approach has been distinctive in biblical studies in his combining of archaeological, inscriptional, linguistic, and theological evidence for a deeper under standing of texts. His work has ranged from archaeological studies through an edition of Hebrew inscriptions, contributions to Hebrew semantics and biblical theology, to exegesis of the Pentateuch and Prophets. His academic work in the field has been expertly summa rized for us by Professor John Emerton in the opening paper of this volume. On Stone and Scroll falls into three parts-archaeology, biblical texts, and language and literacy-and these all reflect main areas cen tral to Graham's work and interests. This volume is to be presented to Graham on his retirement-but we know that this will not be his retirement from the field, just from his distinguished career lecturing and teaching in the Faculty of Divinity in Cambridge, which spans over 30 years. The editors would like to thank the Managers of the Bethune- Baker Fund in the Faculty of Divinity for a grant to support this project. They would also like to thank the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies for their financial support. The editors were all responsible for commissioning and editing, but special thanks should go to Brian Mastin for his very meticulous pre liminary editing work on almost all the articles and to James Aitken for his work on producing camera-ready copy for approximately half of the articles. The camera-ready copy of the other half of the articles was efficiently produced by three Cambridge postgraduates, Joshua Harper, Max Kramer, and Chris Thomson (a current PhD student of Graham's). Particular thanks go to Chris Thomson for his attention to detail and hard work which has contributed greatly to the production of the high-quality camera-ready copy required by De Gruyter. Our thanks also go to the publishers, especially to Dr Albrecht Dohnert for Vlll Preface enthusiastically agreeing to publish this book. Graham's long-standing assodation with De Gmyter and his membership of the ZAW board make this a very fitting publishing connection. The editors decided to tell Graham about this project in very gen eral terms a couple of years ago and so arranged by email to meet him "to discuss a publication." We met in the ancient University Combina tion Room in Cambridge and Graham nervously said, "If you are want ing me to be involved in another publication, I am afraid I am fully booked up." Imagine his surprise and pleasure when we revealed our real purpose! We hope that Graham enjoys the articles in this volume, itself but a small token of our esteem for him.
