Contributions by two other colleagues who took part in the 8 Conference have been added to these papers: the chairperson of 9 COWAP Mariam Alizade, who is the author of many works 30 on feminine identity, and the British psychoanalyst Brendan 1 MacCarthy, who has carried out much theoretical and clinical work 2 on the theme of incest. Both authors present an account of the dis- 3 cussions as they developed during the Conference. 4 The theme of the Conference was chosen because we noted that, 5 curiously, it has been taken into very little consideration by psycho- 6 analysts during recent years. We wanted to promote a confrontation 7 between past and present, and a clinical and theoretical reflection on 8 a problem that, on account of recent historical, social, and cultural 911 development, seems to contain a special kaleidoscopic quality. vii Ambrosio prelims 1st correx 2/10/05 11:52 AM Page viii viii FOREWORD 111 From our perspective, incest is distinct from sexual abuse out- 2 side of the family nucleus; incest, of course, includes abuse, but 3 with a different and particular connotation. At the call for papers 4 presenting clinical cases of incest for the workshop discussions, 5 many colleagues with long-standing experience proposed material 6 that regarded molestation and violence outside the family nucleus. 7 This called my attention to, and strengthened my conviction about, 8 the need to gather together the threads of psychoanalytic thinking 9 in an attempt to foster a clearer conceptualization of what we really 10 mean when referring to incest, while keeping a careful watch over 1 the different psychopathological frameworks and various transfer- 2 ential configurations in which we may find ourselves in these cases. 3 We have also tried to distinguish incestuous “fantasies” from real, 4 acted out incest. 5 On the subject of this dramatic theme, you will also find in this 6 book an attentive view of the “feminine” universe, freed from the 711 Freudian vision of masochistic passivity and fully restored to the 8 area of drives. 9 I wish to thank all those who have agreed to contribute to this 20 book, thus allowing us to reflect on incest yesterday and today with 1 the hope that these discussions may stimulate and reinforce theo- 2 retical and clinical interest in such a crucial theme. 3 A special thank you also to Jacqueline Amati Mehler, for her 4 constant help and for preventing what could have been “lost in 511 translation”. 6 7 Giovanna Ambrosio 8 Editor 9 311 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 911 Ambrosio prelims 1st correx 2/10/05 11:52 AM Page ix 111 CONTRIBUTORS 2 3 4 5 6 711 8 9 10 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 211 Giovanna Ambrosio is a full member of the Italian Psycho- 1 analytical Association (AIPsi), the International Psychoanalytical 2 Association, and the Secretary of the Italian Psychoanalytical 3 Association (AIPsi). Description:
Incest is a universal taboo found throughout history and within myths from all societies. It has been a neglected subject by psychoanalysis in recent years and this volume aims, successfully, to promote confrontation between the past and present and to provide a clinical and theoretical reflection o
