Part is a general over view of the conditions of life for older people in the United States. This section of the book is organized around the spe cial problems of people as they grow old. It is an introduc tion to social gerontology. To some readers this book will seem too optimistic, with its reports of the happiness and economic security of the majority of older people. But the writers have reported what they saw, as they studied a cross-section of America's elders. The old-age group is as much to be envied as to be pitied. Old age has its proper and acceptable fruits, and the aver age person gathers and enjoys a fair share of these as he grows older.
