The handbook may be used by the public interacting with Indian Veterinary Research Institute i.e. Farmers, Students, Teachers, Scientists, Libraries, Institutions etc. 1.4 Organization of the information in this hand-book See ‘Contents’ page. 1.5 Definitions (Please provide definitions of various terms used in the hand- book.) As per the Indian Veterinary Research Institute office order No. Chapter-2 (Manual-1) Particulars of Organization, Functions and Duties 2.1 Objective/purpose of the public authority. The Indian Veterinary Research Institute is the Apex Institution of the Govt. of India in the field of Veterinary Research and Education. 2.2 Mission/Vision Statement of the public authority. The Mission Statement of Indian Veterinary Research Institute is, as follows: “Undertaking pioneering research in veterinary and animal sciences with holistic approach, promoting high quality education and training, developing systems and technologies for better animal health care and production and their transfer to end users, functioning as an effective instrument for nutritional security, poverty alleviationand rural reconstruction.” The Vision Statement of Indian Veterinary Research Institute is, as follows: “Striving for excellence in innovative research, human resource development, technology generation and transfer for improved animal health, productivity responding to the needs of animal owners and lovers with acknowledged leadership among the World nations.” 2.3 Brief history of the public authority and context of its formation. The Indian Veterinary Research Institute was established with the name of Imperial Bacteriological Laboratory in the year 1889 at Pune. It was shifted to the hills in Mukteswar (now in the State of Uttaranchal) in the year 1893. It Regional Centre at Izatnagar was inaugurated in the year 1914. After independence, the Headquarters of the then Imperial Bacteriological Laboratory was shifted from Mukteswar to Izatnagar, and the name of the Laboratory was changed to Indian Veterinary Research Institute. 2.4 Duties of the public authority. Keeping in view the present and future needs, the Institute is embarking upon extensive programmes of research in frontier areas to improve animal health and productivity. In the scenario that is going to unfold, the Institute will have the following mandate: (i) To conduct research, post graduate education and transfer of technology in all areas of animal sciences with emphasis on animal health and production. (ii) To act as national referral centre for veterinary type cultures, disease diagnosis, biologicals and immunodiagnostics. 2.5 Main activities/functions of the public authority. Veterinary Education Activities The Indian Veterinary Research Institute runs the following educational post- graduate educational programmes: (i) M.V.Sc. (Master Degree in Veterinary Science) with specialization in 23 Subjects-fields of Animal Health & Production, e.g. Veterinary Microbiology, Veterinary Pathology, Pharmacology & Toxicology, Physiology & Climatology, Parasitology, Virology etc. (ii) Ph.D. (Doctorate Degree) in 20 Subjects-fields of Animal Health & Production, e.g. Veterinary Microbiology, Veterinary Pathology, Pharmacology & Toxicology, Physiology & Climatology, Parasitology, Virology etc. Veterinary Research Activities (i) The Indian Veterinary Research Institute conducts research in various Subjects-fields of Animal Health & Production under various Divisions e.g. Parasitology, Veterinary Microbiology, Veterinary Pathology, Pharmacology & Toxicology, Physiology & Climatology, Virology etc. (ii) Apart from the Core Research Activities undertaken in various Divisions, the individual Scientists working in various Divisions are able to get sanctioned various externally-funded Time-bound Research Projects, e.g. ICAR Adhoc Research Projects funded out of AP Cess funds, NATP Research Projects funded by World Bank, other Projects funded by DBT, UNDP, etc. Veterinary Extension Activities (i) The Indian Veterinary Research Institute organizes Annual Animal Fair in the month of October every year, in IVRI Stadium Ground. Almost all the ICAR Research Institutes in Northern India install their Exhibition Stalls in the Fair. Many NGO Groups and Private Industry Groups also install their Stalls. Various Animal Competitions like Best Bull Competition, Equines Competition, etc. are organised. (ii) Apart from the above, the Indian Veterinary Research Institute also participates with its Mobile Exhibition Stalls in various Agricultural/Animal Fairs throughout the Country during the whole year. 2.7 Organizational Structure Diagram at various levels namely State, directorate, region, district, block etc. (whichever is applicable).
