An Unparalleled Commitment TO INCREASING THE QUALITY OF CATTLE THROUGH THE USE OF PROFITABLE GENETICS Complete Dispersal of Circle A Angus Herd I June 3, 2017 3 A MAN WHO MADE A Dave Gust By: Tom Burke Dave Gust is truly a man of action and over the past 27 years his personal touch has really put an impact on the Angus industry around the world. Dave and Ruth Gust, the owners of Circle A Angus at Iberia, Missouri, were natives of northern Illinois and built a very successful business in the Chicago, Illinois area from the ground up. In 1990, while traveling to the Lake of the Ozarks in central Missouri, they stopped in at the Sydenstricker Angus Farm Fall Sale and purchased their very first registered Angus cattle for what was to become known as Circle A Angus. American Angus Association records show that Circle A Angus became a member of the American Angus Association on December 19, 1990. In 1993 the Missouri Angus State Field Day was held at Circle A with a tremendous crowd and bubbling over enthusiasm. As the herd began to grow, Mark Akin and his family joined the Circle A team. The first cattle from Circle A were exhibited in 1993 including: Oneills Delia 660, Grand Champion Heifer at the 1993 Ozark Empire Fair, 1993 Missouri and Kansas State Fairs. Princess D 2012, the 1993 All-American Futurity Reserve Late Intermediate Champion Female Mengs Lucy 30Y and YR Lucy Mae 112B, the 1993 All-American Futurity Grand O’Neills Delia 660 Champion Cow and Embryo Calf Circle A Primetime, the 1993 Ozark Empire Grand Champion Bull R & J Victoria, the 1993 All American Reserve Grand Champion Cow with a natural calf The very first Circle A Production Sale was held on November 22, 1993 at the ranch near Iberia, Missouri. It was managed by the American Angus Hall of Fame with Colonel Jerry Lehmann as the auctioneer. The end results were most gratifying as it was the highest averaging first time Angus production sale ever held in the state of Missouri. 58 lots grossed $276,225 and averaged $4,065 with a tremendous crowd of Missouri Angus breeders on hand as well as Angus enthusiasts from throughout Mengs Lucy 30Y and YR Lucy Mae 112B North America. 1994 brought much excitement at Circle A as Mark Akin was selected as the 1994 All-American Futurity all American Manager of the Year, and an article by Tom Burke appeared in the 1994 Circle A Triple Crown sale book from Monday, October 3, 1994 about the great females coming to Circle A. As the Circle A herd continued to expand and grow there was never ending good news. In the 1994 Circle A Production Sale, 100 lots sold for $428,025 and averaged $4,280. In 1993 Gardiner Angus Ranch at Ashland, Kansas purchased a flush from Wehrmann Angus in New Market, Virginia from the famous Rita 5H11 of 1B14 Rito 9J9. The decision was to mate her to the famous Doug Hoff bull, Scotch Cap. The result was one bull and four females. GAR Top Cap 1999 who was the top selling bull of the 1991 Gardiner sale at $18,000 plus GAR Scotch Cap 199, GAR Scotch Cap 209, GAR Scotch Cap 309 and GAR Scotch Cap 509. The later four females were offered as a feature in the 1994 Gardiner sale in Ashland, Kansas held April 2, 1994. Dave Gust of Circle A instructed Bill Bowman to buy all four cows regardless of their cost and mark them to Circle A Angus, as it turned out Bill purchased GAR Scotch Cap 199 and GAR Scotch Cap 309 and by that time he thought he had spent all the money he needed to spend so he passed on GAR Scotch Cap 209 and GAR Scotch Cap 509. GAR Scotch Cap 309 selling for $30,000; GAR Scotch Cap 199 selling for $25,000 to Circle A Angus; GAR Scotch Cap 209 selling for $20,000 to Shady Brook Angus in Tennessee; and GAR Scotch Cap 509 selling for $11,000 to North Fork Angus in Montana. 1995 was a great year at Circle A as they exhibited the Grand Champion Female at the 1995 National Western Stock Show, B&D Queen Ruth, who was also the 1995 Roll of Victory Show Heifer of the Year. Circle A also was delighted to have bred Circle A Western Hauler, the 1995 Roll of Victory Show Bull of the Year. At the 1995 National Western Stock Show, Circle A bred and exhibited the Grand Champion Sale Bull, Circle A Nigel 4031. GAR Scotch Cap 199 4 Complete Dispersal of Circle A Angus Herd I June 3, 2017 DIFFERENCE IN THE ANGUS INDUSTRY! In 1995 Circle A Phantastic 4075 and RA Excel of Circle A were named Grand Champion Heifer and Grand Champion Bull at the 1995 Missouri State Fair, the largest State Fair Angus Show in the nation. In the 1994 Circle A Sale, nine progressive Angus breeders selected Circle A Exclusive 3186 making him the top selling bull of the 1994 Circle A Sale and one of the most widely sampled young sires in the Angus breed having sold more than 7,000 units of semen. 1994-1995 was a time that Dave Gust had all the sizzle that he needed, it was time for the steak, so with the assistance of Dr. Larry Benyshek of the University of Georgia B&D Queen Ruth C9 and his former student, Dr. Denny Herring of the University of Missouri, Circle A Sire Alliance was born in a joint venture with ABS in DeForest, Wisconsin. This exciting livestock evaluation was to revolutionize the beef cattle industry. The Circle A Alliance created excitement from purebred and commercial cattleman around the world. The bulls’ progeny were evaluated for what they really were, not for what you wanted them to be. The results sent shockwaves of positive goodness through the Angus world. Dave Gust believed in the program and was willing to financially support what was to become the most significant bull evaluation project in the world. 1995 was to mark the first Circle A Bull Sale and what a successful event it was on March 19, 1995. By this time the Circle A herd had grown to 700 registered Angus cows and 1,700 commercial Angus females. August 29, 1994 was to mark a major happening, the birth of SVF GDAR 216 Limited. This sensational sire topped the 1995 Sunny Valley sale at Yorkville, Illinois when he was purchased by Circle A. SVF GDAR 216 Limited was to become the most popular bull in the Angus breed and he proved to be a landmark sire in the Angus world. As the Circle A herd continued to grow and mature, the show ring became less explored and the back-to-basics of the beef cattle industry were now the focal point for Dave Gust and Circle A. For the last 17 years, Circle A has focused on breeding and raising bulls that have been profitable for commercial cattle producers. They have built a massive state-of-the-art cattle feeding facilities at their ranch in north central Missouri and they have paid premiums to Circle A customers who have delivered calves to their feeding facility sired by Circle A bulls and it has been one of the most unique and popular programs of its kind anywhere in the world. Once again, it was proved that when Dave Gust puts his mind to it, stand back because it is going to happen. As the herd has continued to grow and expand, Dave Gust’s heart has always been on the commercial side. A dollar and cents person has built the most successful business in carrying these business principles into the beef cattle industry. As the commercial herd has continued to grow and expand, Circle A is the largest independently owned ranch in the State of Missouri consisting of +/- 26,000 acres. During this calendar year, Dave Gust and the personnel at Circle A have made the decision to continue to expand the commercial unit thus dispersing all registered SVF GDAR 216 LTD Angus cattle from the property of the Circle A Ranch.
