Itsmissionembodiesaccess toeducationalopportunity, academicexcellence, andspiritualdevelopmentfor its students who come from diverse geographical, cultural, educational, and socioeconomicbackgrounds. In additionto itsemphasisonthe liberal arts, the college provides biblical, professional, pre-professional, vocational, and continuing education studies. Some of these studies emanate from a limited number of institutional cooperative programs. Its programs and activities are unequivocally Christian in character, designed to integrate faith and learning, encourageavibrantspiritual experience, prepare individualsforservicetoGod and humanity, and provide an atmosphere for appreciation for oneself and affirmation of cultural diversity. Oakwood Facts Location. OakwoodCollegeislocatedfivemilesnorthwestoftheheartofthecity ofHuntsville. Huntsvilleisacosmopolitancitylocatedinthenorthcentralportion of the state of Alabama and nestled in the beautiful Tennessee Valley in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. It has a population of approximately 160,000. Thecollege propertyconsists of 1,185 acresatan elevation of 1,100 feetabovesealevel. Currently, 500acresare undercultivation, and 105acres comprise the main campus. Accreditation. Oakwood College isaccredited bythe Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the Seventh-day Adventist Board of Regents, and awards Associate and Bachelor's Degrees. The Department of Education is accredited bythe National Council ofAccreditation forTeacher Education and the Department of Social Work is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. TheDepartmentofNursing hasfullyapprovedstatusbytheAlabama Board of Nursing. Student Body. Cultural diversityaboundson thecampusofOakwood College where the average enrollment of 1200 students come from as many as forty statesandthirty-sixothercountries. Theresidentialfacilities, two maleandtwo female dormitories, house more than 80 percent of the student body. Family housing is also available for approximatelyforty-five families. Faculty. A dedicated and committed faculty, of approximately seventy-five, relate to students in a caring and "family like" atmosphere as they emphasize academic excellence. Approximately 50 percent of the faculty hold doctorate degrees. Motivation and academic stimulation characterizes the "one on one" interaction offaculty with student, as they share and model Christian ideals. OAKWOOD COLLEGE 1993-1995 Our Ninety-eighth and Ninety-nineth Years Oakwood College offers employment without regard to race, color, sex, origin, age, marital status, orpresence ofa non-job-related medical condition orhandicap. InconformitywithTitleIXoftheEducationAmendmentsActof1972, andSection504oftheRehabilitationActof1973, theVicePresidentforPlanning and Development has been designated asthe responsible employeetocoordi- nate efforts to carry out responsibilities and make investigations of contentions relating to non-discrimination. The college reserves constitutional and statutory rights as a religious institution and employertogive preferencetoSeventh-dayAdventists in admis- sionsandemployment. The collegebelievesthatTitleIXregulationsaresubject toconstitutionalguaranteesagainstunreasonableentanglementwithorinfringe- ments on the religious teachings and practices of the Seventh-Day Adventist church. Thecollegeexpectsstudentsandemployeestoupholdbiblicalprinciples ofmoralityanddeportmentasinterpretedbytheSeventh-DayAdventistchurch. The college claims exemptions from the provisions of Title IX set forth in CFR Sections 86.21 86.31 86.40, and 86.57(b) insofar as they conflictwith church , , teachings and practices of morality, deportment, and appearance. The institution reserves the right to revise its policies within a school year. Such changes take effect immediately, provided they have been written or publicly announced.
