She has received 13 research grants and has authored two books: Sex Traffi cking: A Clinical Guide for Nurses (Springer Publishing) and the AJN Book of the Year Award winner, Caring for the Vulnerable: Perspectives in Nursing Theory, Practice and Research, now in its third edition (with a fourth edition to be published in 2015). Averill, PhD, RN, is associate professor of nursing at the University of New Mexico College of Nursing. She has been involved in researching rural health issues for more than 20 years, bringing to the forefront the unique con- sideration of health care access challenges faced by older adults; community partnership models for describing, analyzing, and addressing community-level health disparities for older adults; and transcultural considerations for older adults living in remote regions near international borders. She is a senior fellow at the New Mexico Center for the Advancement of Research Engagement and Science (NM CARES), which is a National Institutes of Health and National Institute for Minority Health and Health Disparities funded center at the Uni- versity of New Mexico. She has developed and maintains the Qualitative Café, an open qualitative research forum for faculty members and students at the University of New Mexico. She is facilitator of a qualitative methods research cluster and a rural–vulnerable populations group at the Western Institute of Nursing (WIN), and has developed and taught courses in rural and cultural health, critical ethnography and community-based participatory research (CBPR), qualitative methods, and nursing theory development. Elizabeth A. Barnhill, RN, MSN, began her nursing career as a U.S. Navy Nurse Corps offi cer, serving 10 years in various nursing assignments through- out the country. She completed her master of science in nursing degree with an emphasis on nursing informatics. Currently, Ms. Barnhill works in patient safety and quality as a surgical clinical reviewer for surgical outcomes. She is in the process of completing her dissertation toward a DNS degree from Kennesaw State University. Grady D. Barnhill, LCDR, USN (Ret.), started his career as a special opera- tions offi cer in the U. S. Navy, and has over 30 years experience working in secure environments, handling highly classifi ed documents and digital infor- mation.
