Praise for this book “Nurses have a key role to play within the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Team. Yet there are few textbooks devoted to the specialist and advanced roles which many undertake within this field of practice. This text will fill the void addressing legal and ethical issues while focusing upon clinical practice and the application of theoretical concepts.” Fiona Smith, Adviser in Children’s and Young People’s Nursing, Royal College of Nursing “It includes contributions from a range of experts who bring their insights from work across many settings. The case vignettes inserted represent a broad range of childhood problems, but this book is not prescriptive about nursing care. On the contrary, readers are encouraged to consider for every child the wider contexts of child development, parenting, multi-agency collaboration, safeguarding and the evaluation of outcomes.” Woody Caan, Department of Child & Family Health, Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge, UK “This book considers the range of skills and roles that nurses now undertake within specialist CAMHS, it provides a good basic introduction for nurses and clinicians from other disciplines. Discussion around medication management as part of a nurse’s extended role is timely and will be of particular use to those considering this option within their practice. The text is easily accessible, utilising case studies to enhance learning. The inclusion of research and audit helps raise the need not only for nurses to be more involved in research but also the need for clinicians to evaluate their practice. I would recommend this text to clinicians new to CAMHS.” Sharon Pagett, Senior Lecturer, Mental Health (CAMHS), University of Central Lancashire, UK Contents The editors ix The contributors xi Acknowledgements xiii Introduction 1 1 Defining mental health and mental illness 7 Sharon Leighton and Nisha Dogra 2 Child and family development 19 Mani Das Gupta and Clay Frake 3 The aetiology of child mental health problems 33 Nisha Dogra, Mani Das Gupta and Sharon Leighton 4 Legal and ethical considerations in CAMH 46 Sharon Leighton 5 Nursing assessment in CAMHS 55 Nisha Dogra and Laurence Baldwin 6 Counselling and the therapeutic use of self 69 Sharon Leighton 7 Family work and CAMHS nursing 84 Clay Frake 8 Cognitive behavioural therapy and the CAMH nurse 96 Michael Hodgkinson 9 Nurse prescribing and medication management in CAMHS 110 Noreen Ryan and Teresa Norris 10 Inpatient CAMH nursing: two different models of care 124 Sarah Hogan, Ged Rogers an d Neil Hemstock 11 Multi-agency working 134 Sarah Hogan, Nisha Dogra and Cath Kitchen 12 Working with vulnerable children and young people 145 Viki Elliott and Panos Vostanis 13 Clinical governance, audit and supervision 155 Nisha Dogra and Dee Davies 14 Nurses and CAMH research 167 Sharon Leighton, Lawrence Baldwin and Peter Nolan 15 Developing mental health services for children and adolescents 181 Mervyn Townley and Richard Williams Index 195 The editors Dr Nisha Dogra is a senior lecturer and honorary consultant in child and adolescent psychiatry at the University of Leicester.
