Lauren B. Eisenberg Davis, one of the primary founders of our group, Special Merest Group and the person who so ably was in charge of research projects at the SIG, had to step down from her responsibilities because of a serious journal illness in her family and other personal matters. ISSN No. 1092-8006 I remember that first meeting in Boston during the closing Friday ©1999, all material this issue morning hours of the Summer Seminar. Sh e had called a "birds of a feather" meeting for all those genealogists interested in forming a published quarterly by the special interest group focusing on the Kielce and Radom gubernias of KIELCE-RADOM Poland. With a fatigued Warren Blatt by her side (he was just Special Interest Group (SIG) completing a grueling few months chairing one of the most successful national Jewish genealogy seminars ever held), Lauren combed the a non-profit, informal world-wide dozen or so attendees for their degree of interest. I entered the body of individuals interested in Jewish picture only when it seemed her efforts to get the SIG going would genealogical research from Kielce and fail because no one had volunteered to coordinate her efforts. [add $6.00 for overseas airmail delivery instead of surface mail delivery] Summer 1999 Kielce-Rado m SIG Journal, Vol.3, No.3 3 Polish State Archives in Sandomierz Warren Blatt Below is an inventory of Jewish records held by the Polish State Archives in Sandomierz, obtained from a researcher who visited the archives in Poland. Th e Sandomierz archives is one of the four branches archives of the Polish State Archives in Kielce alon g with the archives in Jedrzejôw, Piriczôw, and Starachowice. Th e Sandomierz archives is the one branch of the Kielce archives not contained within the Kielce Archives' 199 3 catalog (see Kielce-Radom SIG Journal 1:2, pages 3-7); they last published an inventory in 1979. Housed in the former synagogue, the State Archives branch in Sandomierz (Archiwum Paristwowe Oddzial w Sandomierzu) is located at #4 ulica Zydowska, 27-600 Sandomierz, Poland. Telephon e 832-25-09. Amon g its holdings are Jewish vital records for several towns formerly in southern Radom and western Lublin gubernias. The LDS have microfilmed mos t of these records, through the mid-1880s (see Kielce- Radom SIG Journal, 1:1, pages 6-7). T o obtain copies of the later records (mid-1880s to late 1890s), you can write to the main archives in Warsaw, who will forward your request to the branch archives in Sandomierz (see "Vital Records in Poland - A Primer" in Kielce-Radom SIG Journal 1:2, pages 3-7). This inventory can be compared with that in Miriam Weiner's Jewish Roots in Poland: Pages from the Past and Archival Inventories (see Kielce-Radom SIG Journal 11:2, pages 21-24), pages 354-355. Miria m Weiner's inventory also includes non-vital records, which this inventory does not. However , the inventory below contains a few more details on gaps in the records, extends a few additional years into the 1890s, and contains information about "marriage supplement" records. In addition to birth, marriage and death registrations, the Sandomierz archives also has "marriage supplements" for a few towns. Thes e are indicated in the inventory below with an "S". Thes e "marriage supplements" or "marriage proofs", known as "dowody" or "alegata" or "aneksy" or "dokumenty do akt malzenstw" in Polish (there appears to be no standard name), are documents which support various facts in the marriage registration, such as the birth information for the bride or groom from another town, or the death or divorce of a former spouse. Ver y few of these "marriage supplements" have been microfilmed by the LDS, an d none for the Kielce-Radom region. However , they do exist in the various Polish State Archives branches, but they were not included in the inventories in Miriam Weiner's Jewish Roots in Poland. For more information about "marriage supplement" records, see the article "Tykocin Jewish Marriages", by Donald M. Levinsohn, in Landsmen (Quarterly Publication of the Suwalk-Lomza Interest Group for Jewish Genealogists), Vol. 5, No. 4 (Spring 1995), pages 20-41. Their family name was Shulmeister. I have created an index of names memorialized in the Opatow yizkor book in order to help others involved in Opatow research. The Opatow yizkor book was published in Israel in 1966. Original title: Apt (Opatow); sefer zikaron le-ir va-em be-yisrael [Apt; a town which does not exist any more]. Editor: Z. Yasheev. (Tel Aviv: The Apt Organization in Israel, USA, Canada, and Brazil, 1966). 464 pages. Languages: Hebrew, Yiddish and English. Memorial boxes were taken out by families to commemorate their relatives killed in the Holocaust. These memorials can be found on pages 407-441. Most are written in Yiddish but some are in Hebrew. This necrology is an index of names taken from these memorial boxes. If a sibling was listed with the name of the spouse and children, a separate listing was made apart from the names of the parents. Needless to say, this is not a complete list of Opatow Jews killed.
