BACKGROUNDANDOBJECTIVES 1. Background NTT,oneofthelargesttelephonecompaniesintheworld,wantstoassesstheconvergence ofvoice,imageanddatatechnologiesintheareaofmessaging. Today'sbusiness communicationtools~includingvoicemail,facsimile,computer/workstationgeneratedE- Mailandvideomail—aredramaticallyimprovingcompanies'productivityand communicationscapabilities. Integratingthesedifferentclassesofmailandmakingthem accessiblethroughapersonalcomputerortelephonekeypadisnowacommercial possibility,asevidencedbysuchproductsasPowerCall(OctelCommunications Corporation),FaxAttendant(AT&T)andOneCall(CentrigramCommunications). ElectronicmailsystemshaveevolvedsomewhatdifferentlyinJapanandtheUnitedStates. InJapan,thefaxbasedsystemshavebeenthedominantinfluenceontheevolutionary process. Overtime,wecananticipatethatmoreproductsandserviceswillbedeveloped whichwillintegratevoice,videoandtextintofaxbasedsystems. IntheUnitedStates, voicebasedsystemshavebeenpredominantwithtextandfaxandotherimagebased servicesplayingasomewhatlessdominantrole. NTTwishestoplaceemphasisonsystems whicharemostlikethosethathavebeenevolvinginJapan. Theapplicationofintegratedmessagingsystemscanbequitevaried. Objectives • Obtaininformationonthecurrentimplementationofintegratedmessagingtechnology withintheUnitedStates;including. - Technologybeingdeployed - Sizeandconfigurationofexistingnetworksutilizingthetechnology - Typeofapplicationscurrentlyimplemented • Identifythetypesofdocumentsormessagesthataremostfrequentlytransportedacross integratedmessagingsystemsanddeterminetypicalvolumesoftraffic,etc. • Identifyfuturetrendsintechnologyevolutionandapplications • Determinethereasonswhyusershaveelectedtoimplementthetechnology. • Ranktheclassesofservicesandbusinessapplicationsmostfrequentlyusedandidentify thereasonswhy. B. SCOPE • Thescopeofthisprojectwillbelimitedtotheinvestigationofthedeploymentof integratedmessagingsystemswithintheUnitedStatewithemphasisonfaxbased integratedmessagingsystems. • Thetechnologytobeexaminedwillbelimitedtoservicesandtechnologylinking personalcomputer/workstationbasedmessagingwithfax,videoandvoicemessaging systemsasdescribedintheBackgroundsectionabove. C. METHODOLOGY Tomeetthestatedobjectives,INPUTproposesathreephasedstudy. • AuseranalysisofcurrentdeploymentandappUcationofthetechnology • Avendoranalysisofcurrentproductofferingsandfutureplans • In-depthon-siteinterviewsbyNTTofleadingedgevendorsandusers Theproposedmethodologyforeachphasefollows. 1. UserAnalysis INPUTproposestelephonesurveystomeettheobjectivesofprovidinginformation regardingcurrentdeploymentofintegratedmessagingsystems;includmg,thetechnology employed,applications,sizeofthenetworks,externalservices(particularlythosebeing providedbycommoncarriers)andfutureplans. Thefieldresearchwouldbeconductedas follows: • AmeetingwillbeheldwithNTTsU.S.basedprojectcoordinatortofinalizeobjectives fortheuserfieldresearch. • INPUTwilldesignauserquestionnairetoobtaintherequiredinformation. VendorAnalysis INPUTwillconduct5telephoneinterviewsofvendorstoobtaininformationoncurrent productofferings,futureofferings,serviceandmaintenancestrategies. Theresearchwill proceedasfollows.
