M. Punch 3 roWSPAPBR VITAL STATISnCS The present cooqpllation marks a neiir departure in the activities of the Genealogical Coioaittee of the Nova Scotia Historical Society^ inasmuch as it is the first time that a special publication has been put together and sold in its orn right by the Committee. It is our hope that this might prove the first in a series of such genealogical reference books about Nova Scotia. Gathered between these covers are all of the items reported in fiirth> Marriage and Death sections of the Acadian ^ecorder during its first decade of existence. VIhen, as happened in a few Instances, copies were lacking, an alternative conteiqporary newspaper, such as the Weekly Chronicle or Halifax Journal, was consulted. The spellings that were used at the time have been retained, though one is often tempted to make the obvious corrections—e.g«, RLsbet for Nlbet (#2033). In a very few Instances the name could not be read at all, or only in part. A series of dots («..) indicates missing matter. The Index which acconqpanies these extracts is a coiqplete alphabetical listing of all of the items copied, except that names of the officiating olexgymen have been excluded. Since so much of the life of Nova Scotia was bound up with the merchant vessels and the Royal Navy, a second Index has been provided so that those seeking inforaiatlon about certain ships could more readily find the references that they required. The reporting of marriages and deaths favoured the prominent and those of means, but sometimes the circumstances of a death or a wedding invited att«ition by virtue of the tragic circumstances or the unusual nature of the union. You will find giants and midgets, victims of duels and drownlngs, of falls from rooftops and off of vessels; you will come across the marriages of ths very oH to the very young. Most iiq!>ortantly, even among these bare names and dates, you will sense occasionally the flavour of the times: the bustle of wartime, the sluiq> of peacetime, the plying to and fro of vessels, and the Intimacy of life in the small town that Halifax then was, and in the struggling colony that Nova Scotia then was. The reader will observe that the use of the titles *lfr.** and •fisq.* have been retained. In the world of our ancestors, 160 years ago, there was a real social distinction between a “Mister* and an “Esquire*. It was often an indication of a man's position in the community that he was referred to as "Esq.*, and not the mere whim of the journalist. In this, as in so many ways, the world has changed. We hope that this collection will help you to find people idio lived in the Nova Scotia of those other days. 4 ABEREVIATIONS USED In gaieral> ths abbreviations iirtiich were used in this compilation have been standard ones, and there is no particular need to supply an exhaustive list of these, since most dictionaries will provide such information. In a few oases, abbreviations are not so standard. Where the context indicates a clsar meaning, no e3q)lanation has been considered necessary here. This is a minimal list and is intended to supply only those meanings which might seem peculiar to this one work, or to have a very limited application. There are two symbols which wore used throughout, thou^ their intent may not seem as obvious as the editor had hoped, namelys— + meaning “-Died*. - msaning "Married*. A select list of abbreviations includes the followings A.M. - Acadian ^ecorder. Batt. - Battalion. ch. - child, children. Comm.-Gen. - Commissary-General. d/o - daughter of. grch. - grandchild. ggrch.- great grandchild. Hfx. - Halifax. H.J. - Halifax Journal. W.S.R.G. - Wova-Scotia Royal Gazette. s/o - son of. W.C. - Weekly Chronicle. DAYS THE papers APPEARED The Haligonian paper readers of the period included in this collection had the Halifax Journal, which appeared on Mondays; the Gazette, which issued every Wednesday; the Weekly Chronicle, a Friday publication; and the Acadian Recorder on Saturdays. Several of the early newspapers had mistakes in their dates, from time to time, but only once~Monday, 23 August 1813—does » newspaper appear to have issued on a day of the week on which it normally did not come out. No word was given to explain why the Acadian Recorder appeared two days late that week, but a likely explanation is a shortage of paper or ink during wartime.
