Tpr. EL ALCOCK of this district who went to S. Africa as a
member of the Imperial Bushmen, writing to a friend, says
[c9.1900] - 'Being under fire is the most f? experience one can
go through, and once you are under it you are never happy
until you are under it again, and just at present, I believe I
am one of the most bloodthirsty villains in the regiment.'
What concerned Trooper ALCOCK more than the Boer bullets
was the setting fire to a large amount of stores, rations,
clothes etc. which had to be done to prevent them falling into
the hands of the Boers. It seemed, he says, a great shame to
destroy about 100,000 pounds worth of provisions and
clothing when the men in the regiment had hardly a coat to
their backs and were short of food, but still they could not
load their horses with anything that was not absolutely
wanted. All this happened near Z..? From the Fighting Lines -

Northern Star, Lismore: Monday 10th May 1926, "BURNT TO
DEATH" - Windaroo homestead, Lower Acacia Creek was
completely gutted by fire at 11 o'clock on Thursday night.
The owner, Captain Alcock, was burnt to death. The family
were away from home at the time, th eonly occupants being
the Captain and a man employee. The fire had a good hold
before the inmates were aroused. Both rushed outside but
Captain Alcock returned, evidently to secure some papers
and valuables, and was over come by smoke. The charred
remains were found after the fire had subsided. The captain
was a war cripple and was handicapped by a wooden leg. He
was popular in the district and one of the prime movers in
the railway matters in connection with the Grafton-Killarney
proposals.

friends of the bride and bridegroom met, Mr and Mrs Small left
by social conveyance for Bega to catch the boat for Sydney
and thence to The Manning. Mr and Mrs Small intend to live on
the Orara.

marriage of Miss Joan Alcock, only daughter of M and Mrs H.
L. Alcock. of Glen Garry. Monto, to Mr Vincent James
Caulfleld, eldest son of Mr and Mrs O. J. Caulfleld, took place
at St Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Biloela, on
September 1. Nuptial Mass was celebrated by Rev. Father
O'Dwyer, with Father Collins assisting. The bride chose blue
and white, the colours of the Children of Mary, of which she
was a member, for her wedding dress. Chantilly lace over
blue nylon tulle with a white satin Slip fashioned her
ballerina gown, revealing her sparkling; brocaded shoes Her
three-tier flnger-tip veil of white embroidered tulle was held In
place by a coronet of fine platted nylon straw. She wore long
blue mittens and her bouquet, which was flown, from
Brisbane with the other wedding flowers, was of pink orchids
and camellias. As she left the church, the bride's young
cousin, Kevin Alcock, placed over her arm a silver horseshoe
with white heather, flown from Scotland by two cousins of the
bride's mother. Her bridesmaid, Miss Ann Macnamara, from
Delbessie station, Hughenden, wore a pink curvette and
silver shoeswith her watermelon pink flock nylon ballerina
frock, She carried a bouquet of pink carnations, shaped like a
fan. The bridegroom's brother, Mr Dennis Caulfleld, was
bestman. After the ceremony, the mothers of the bride and
bridegroom received 160 guests at the reception at the
Commercial Hotel Mrs Alcock wore a grey paper shantung
gown with pink accessories and a shoulder spray of pink
carnations. Mrs Caulfleld's gown was of fawn and white
Shantung with white and black accessories. Her corsage was
of white carnations. Rev. Father O'Dwyer was chairman and
the customary toasts were honoured. During the happy
proceedings the bride and groom had pleasure in cutting
their four-tiered wedding cake. Mr and Mrs Caulfleld are
spending their honeymoon at the coast with Mackay as their
headquarters for three weeks. On their return they will live at
Rawbette where Mr Caulfield has a farming property.-Biloela
