Perkins DESCRIPTION: OBVERSE: Well centered strike, although a bit toward 8:00, or so, so that AUCT about at edge and wide denticles 1:00 to 4:00. A pleasing, • smooth, somewhat variegated brown/red brown flan, glossy and hard, with no defects. Called "virt¬ ually mint state" in the Hessberg Cat.,there are only the slightest signs of wear in the two lower pairs of leaves of wreathand knot of hair ribbon.a strong, bold strike. -WE1RSE.: Similar flan characteristics. All design details strong and bold with only the slightest evidences of circulation in the highest elements. Struck off center a little toward 12;30, o4 so, so that top of head is right on the edge but not affected.Wide denticles from 3*00 to 9*00. Full, strong date, dateline with an apparent faint break between the two ?’s. Called,"High condition v. . V census" by Michael Hodder in the Starr II .* catalogue Fourth finest in GCP "Tentative Condition Census as at 1/28/93, after Oechsners1094,"MS"@$3575s ANS 1914 Colonial Exhibit xofi, MS;and Garrett, 3*1361,CH.UNC <§$7200. The ANS'soec. is only VG; CNL has a VF; R.Martin had a VG(Feb.’84, possibly., now replaced. There was a "nice EF" in L. Merkin’s 10/31/73 Sale, L. 167 (not plated).Not in Taylor;Norweb:2521 was only F-12. * Dr. Hall's attribution number,"28 mu in yellowed white paint. Struck a little off-center toward OBVERSE: 12:00, or so, so that CTORI right on edge of flan but no details affected,on a mottled reddish brown, granular flan.Obverse flawed vertically through the bust.CTO very 1ight.CONNEC, drapery approach XF in strength. REVS RSE:Struck off-center toward 6:00, or so, so that practically all the date off flan. Similar flan characteristics.V. light striae vertically through figure. Most detail is of at least VF-20-30 strength except N of INDE very light. Called "Condition Census" by M. There is a natural mineral iwlnHiw flaw in center of neck of the figure and a fine striae from T of AUCTORI toward nose, both noted only for future identific- ation;right side detail at least F-15; while left side is much weaker, probably only the AG-3 of the cataloguer.Nevertheless, AUCTORI is vestigially present, though face of figure can ^karcely be made out. REVERSE: Similar flan, coloration, etc.; a couple of fine striae central figure and lower central ft figure,another between D and S of INDE, all minor. Overall,considerably stronger than the obverse- Peripheral details, including legend, punctual; and date range from VG-8 to AVF-20.Figure fairly well outlined, but weak in central details.Nevertheless, considerably better than the cataloguer's grade of AG-3/4 would indica^. A condition census candidate for this rare Connecticut variety, with a very low average condition.
