Thecollection by Bünnemeijer (107) fromSumatra, Westcoast Reserve, Ophir District, NofTalurepresentsthetypeandis depositedin BO. TheMalay Peninsula collectionfromPerak, G. Kerbau was madeby Md. Haniff(4019). TheBornean materialwas collectedby theauthorofthisnote,inBrunei, Temburong District, near Fig. 1.ApostasiaellipticaJ.J.Smith.Afruitingspecimenfrom Borneo.PhotographA.D.Poulsen. 130 BLUMEA Vol. 38, No. 1, 1993 thesubcamp PondokBusiriontheway toBukitBelalong. Specimensofthelattercol- lection are deposited intheherbariaofBRUN, K, andAAU.The determinationby A.D. PoulsenandH.AE. Pedersen as A.elliptica using thekey in DeVogel (1969) wasconfirmedbythelatter. One specimen (Poulsen89) was collectedinfloweron May25, 1991.Twoaddi- tionalspecimens were collectedinlateflowerand youngfruits(see Fig. 1)onMarch 20, 1992afewhundredmetres fromthefirstlocation. During aquantitative inven- tory ofgroundherbsinFebruary 1991onesingle sterileindividualof.A.elliptica was found29.7 m S and 22.3mE fromtheNW corner ofa permanent 1-haplot (Plot number2) establishedby Universiti BruneiDarussalam, atanelevationof250m. This plantwas leftundisturbed. Allfour specimens ofA. elliptica known fromBorneo havebeen recordedfrom thesameridge in Brunei,occurring onlyonthedrierridge top nearoron atrailand atelevationsbetween250and550m.AsA.elliptica isnot a common species inthe area, the establismentofaNationalParkof45.000hain theBatu Apoi Forest Re- serve, whichincludes thelocalitiesofthis discovery, willbe important forthefuture survival ofthis species in Borneo.
