PriortotheCivilWaraportionofthepresentcampuswastheproperty ofthe Bullardfamily ofNatchitoches.Asearly as 1856theBullardmansion was inuseas aconvent bytheReligiousoftheSocietyoftheSacredHeart.Thefollowingyearaschoolbuildingwaserected attheconvent,andin 1884thepropertywaspurchasedbythetownandparishofNatchitoches.Three ofthe fourgreat white columns thatonce supportedtheeastgableofthe Bullardmansion still stand on "The Hill" andoften serve astheunofficial symbol ofthe University. TheStateLegislaturebyAct51 of1884createdaLouisianaStateNormalSchoolforthepreparation ofteachers.A memberofthe Legislature, Leopold Caspari, offeredtheconvent site as acampusfor the SchoolwiththeanticipatedapprovalofthecitizensofNatchitoches. Theofferwasaccepted, and from 1885 to 1918 the Normal School offered two years of study for the training of teachers. Baccalaureate programs were then inaugurated, andthe State Constitution adoptedin 1921 changed thenameoftheschooltoLouisianaStateNormalCollege. The resources and curricula of "Normal" grew steadily to meet the increasingly diverse requirements ofLouisiana's expanding population. In 1944 the institution's excellent service in its broaderrole was accordedformal recognition inAct326oftheLegislature, which changeditsname toNorthwestern StateCollegeofLouisiana. Northwestern maintainedand strengthenedits long tradition ofleadership in public service and academicendeavorandbecame,in 1954,thefirstcollegeunderthejurisdictionoftheLouisianaState BoardofEducationtooffertheMaster'sdegree.TheSpecialistinEducationdegreewasfirstoffered in 1966. OnJune 18, 1970, GovernorJohnJ. McKeithen signedthe legislativeactwhichbroughttheold school itsgreatestdistinctionbychangingits titletoNorthwestern StateUniversityofLouisiana. In 1980theoldcampusquadranglewherethecolumnsstandwasenteredintotheNationalRegister ofHistoric Places underthetitle "Normal Hill Historic District." In 1984 Northwestern State University celebrated its Centennial with lectures, concerts, social events, and an effective fund raising effort that established the Centennial Development Fund. In addition tothe main campusinNatchitoches, thepresentUniversityhaspermanentfacilitieslocated inLeesvilleand Shreveportandoffersinstruction atothercenters incentralLouisiana. LOCATION ThemainUniversitycampuscoversanareaofsome916acresimmediatelywestofNatchitoches, Louisiana.Thecityisinthenorthwesternpartofthestateabout50milesnorthwestofAlexandriaand 75 miles southeastofShreveport, Louisiana'sthirdlargestcity. Thecampus,encompassingrollingpinehillsandrichriverbottomland,isoneofthemostspacious and attractive in the South. The natural beautyofthe sitedrewpeople to iteven in prehistorictimes. Long the home of a major Indian tribe for which it was named, Natchitoches was fortified by the French in 1714 as an outpostoftheirNewWorldempire facing Spanish Texas to the west. The city today takes pride in its standing as the oldestpermanent settlementin theentire LouisianaPurchase Territory. Although the fires of Civil War scarred the Cane River Country, Natchitoches escaped relatively unharmed, andmanytracesofitscolonial andantebellumheritagesremain. Now acity ofabout 25,000, Natchitoches has an excellent system ofpublic schools, numerous churches, alargemodemhospital, andaprogressivemunicipal government. Situatedonthebanksof the beautiful Cane River, Chaplin's, and Sibley lakes, and lying in the heartofLouisiana's lake and forestcountry, thecity maybedescribedascolorful and unique. The Nursing Education Centerin Shreveportat 1800LineAve. istheresidential campus forthe Departments of Undergraduate Studies in Nursing and Graduate Studies and Research in Nursing. TheNursingEducationCenteriscomposedofinstitutional facilitiesincludinginstructional areasand administrative/faculty offices. Nursing Education also maintains a satellite campus in Alexandria, Louisianaatthe England IndustrialAirpark.
