Althoughitis truethatNorthernEssexhasnotbeenabletoescapethe state'scontinu- ingfiscalcrisisunscathed, Iamhappytoreportthatthecollegeremains ingoodhealth andthatdemandforthe serviceswhich weprovidehasneverbeen stronger. Despite successivereductionsandthehardships andinconveniencesassociated withthem, I feelconfidentthatwehavebeenabletomaintaintheacademic integrity ofour programs andtocontinuetodelivertheacademicsupportthatis soimportanttoour students. Inthemidstofallthebadnews announcing declining state supportandthegrowing fiscalcrisiswithintheCommonwealth,therealso, ironically,hasbeen somevery positiveandexcitingnewsforNorthernEssex. InMarchof1991,GovernorWeldannouncedthatthePrudentialInsuranceCompanyof AmericawouldbedonatingtotheCommonwealtha$15 millionbuildingtobeusedasa permanentLawrencecampusforNorthernEssexCommunityCollege.Thisrepresents thelargestprivatesectordonationevermadetoaMassachusettscommunitycollegeand therealizationofalong-timegoalofourinstitution. Wewillnowbein apositionto expandourservicesinLawrenceandbenefitthousandsofstudentsinthatarea. Astheeventsofthepastyeardemonstrate, itis importanttomaintaingoals stead- fastly,especially whenchallengesdevelop. Wehaveateachingfaculty whoconcentratetheireducation,experienceandeffortintheclassroom.Whenyoureducationis completed,youwilljointhethousandsofNorthernEssexgraduateswhohavetransferred successfullytobaccalaureateprograms,orbecomeapartofthehighlyskilledbusiness, industrialorprofessionalworkforceforwhichNewEnglandisfamous. Youwill beabletostudyatNorthernEssexatanextremelylowcost.Theaveragefulltime studentresidinginMassachusettsspendsapproximately$700asemesterfortuitionandfees excludinginsurance.Part-timestudyiscomparablyinexpensive.Anumberoffinancialaid sourcesareavailabletoeligiblestudentsandanyonereallyinterestedinacollegeeducationcan findawaytoaffordNorthernEssex. NorthernEssexisapublic,two-yearcollegewhichofferscomprehensiveprogramsofstudy leadingtotheAssociateinArtsdegree,theAssociateinSciencedegreeandCertificatesof programcompletion.Excellentfacilities,solidacademicsupportservicesandanactivestudent activityprogramarepartoftheeducationalopportunitiesavailableatNorthernEssex.Flexible schedulingandanopportunitytocompleteyourdegreeorcertificateatyourownpaceare hallmarksofaNorthernEssexeducation. ProgramsspecificallydesignedfortransferareofferedintheLiberalArts,Business,Engineer- ingScienceandBusinessEducationforthosestudentsplanningtoworktowardaBachelorof ArtsdegreeoraBachelorofSciencedegreeatafour-yearinstitutionaftergraduationfrom NorthernEssex.Ourgraduateshavebeenconsistentlysuccessfulastransferstudentsinpublic andprivatecollegesanduniversitiesthroughoutthecountry. Careerprogramsareofferedinthearts,business,humanservices,healthprofessions,social services,theparalegalarea,thetechnologiesandofficetechnologyforthosestudentswho intendtoseekemploymentuponcompletionoftheassociatedegree.Careerprograms,although notdesignedspecificallyfortransfer,havesignificantproventransferpotential. TheGeneralStudiesprogramisavailabletostudentswhohavenotdecidedonaparticularfield ofstudyandwantanopportunitytoexploretheirinterestsandabilities.NorthernEssex especiallyencouragesacademicexplorationinthisprogramofstudy. NorthernEssexispartofthelocalMerrimackValleycommunity.TheruralHaverhillcampus bordersKenozaLake,andisjustoneminutefromExit52onInterstateRoute495.Northern EssexisminutesawayfromtheGreaterLawrenceandGreaterNewburyportareas,andlessthan thirtyminutesfromtheCityofLowell.Thankstothegenerousdonationofa68,000squarefoot buildingbythePrudentialInsuranceCompanyofAmerica,thecollegenowalsohasaperma- nentcampusintheheartoftheCityofLawrence.Itisanticipatedthateventuallyafullrangeof academicprograms,noncreditofferingsandsupportserviceswillbeavailableatthissite. ExtensioncampusesarelocatedinAndover, NewburyportandReading.Ourlocationsmean easycommuting,minimumdisturbanceofhomeandjobschedules,andavoidanceofexpensive dormitoryandfoodplancosts.WeareinclosetouchwithwhatisgoingonintheMerrimack Valley-weareintouchwiththekindsofacademicprogramspeoplewanttostudy,theskills trainingthecommunityneeds,andwherecareeropportunitiesforourgraduatesarelocated. 8
