As SpecialAssistantto GovernorTerrySanford, Mr. Ehle skillfullynavigatedthe North Carolina legislature to foundthe school. Mr. Ehle understoodhowimportantitwas forthe state's new conservatoryto have its own campus ratherthan beinglocated on the campus ofan existing constituent oftheUniversityofNorth Carolina system. Thepoliticallandscape ofNorth Carolinainthe early 1960s makes iteven more amazing that aprogressive governor and avisionarywritercould foundfour significant educationalinstitutions: the Governor's School, The North Carolina School of Science and Math, the North CarolinaAdvancementSchool, andthe North Carolina School oftheArts. Mr. Ehle also had ahandin establishingthe North CarolinaFilm Board andthe North CarolinaInstitute ofOutdoorDrama. native North Carolinian andgiftedwriter, John Ehle haswon acclaim Iforhis historical novels aboutAppalachia andforhis nonfictionbook \TrailofTears: TheRiseandFallofthe CherokeeNation. Mr. Ehle has )een awardedthe North CarolinaAwardforLiterature, the Thomas Wolfe Prize, the Lillian SmithAwardfor Southern Fiction, the Sir alterRaleighAward forFiction, the MayflowerAward, the Pt’Governor'sAward forMeritorious Service, and the JohnTyler Caldwell Awardforthe Humanities. He has receivedhonorarydoctorates from UNC-Chapel Hill, UNC-Asheville, Berea College (Kentucky), and the JohnEhleattheFounder'sForum North Carolina School oftheArts. WatsonHall AprU22,2006 John Ehle andhiswife RosemaryHarris, live inWinston-Salem. They also have residences in Penland, N.C., andin NewYorkCity. Mr. Ehle andMrs. Harris have a daughter, JenniferEhle. Mr. Ehle'swife and daughter areboth actresses, andhe hasremarkedthathe isAuntMay's {Spider-Man) husband andLadyMacbeth's father.
