The previous symposium was held in Trondheim in 2019 as theCOVID-19pandemicforcedustocancelin2020and2021.Thesymposiumaimsat bringingtogetherresearchersandpractitionersinthefieldofartificialintelligence(AI) from Norway and Scandinavia to present ongoing work and discuss the future of AI. Withthesymposium,NAISprovidesaforumfornetworkingamongresearchersaswell as building links with related research fields, practitioners, businesses, and the public sector. Thisyeartherewere17submissions.Eachsubmissionwasreviewedbyatleasttwo ProgramCommitteemembersaswellasoneofthesymposiumco-chairs.Thequality ofthesubmissionswasveryhigh,and11paperswerefinallyacceptedforpublication, whichwerepresentedinfourtechnicalsessions–twoonTuesday,May31,andtwoon Wednesday,June1.Theprogramincludedfourinvitedkeynotetalksandacommercial pitchandpanelsession.Inaddition, threetutorialswereofferedbeforethestartandafter theendofthemainevent. ThesymposiumstartedatnoononTuesdaywithawelcomeaddressbysymposium co-chair Evi Zouganeli. The first part of the symposium was dedicated to applied AI and robotics for real-life applications. The first keynote was given by Filippo Sanfil- ippo, University of Agder, who discussed different technologies, types of robots, and theirapplicationsincludinginIndustry5.0,wearablerobotics,intelligenthealth,human- robotinteractionandcollaboration,andsearch-and-rescuescenarios.Thiskeynotewas theperfectintroductiontothefollowingpitchandpaneldiscussionon“AI-androbotics- enabled systems – status, barriers, and timeline for deployment in real-life systems”. The session was introduced by Evi Zouganeli and included three pitch presentations. NilsJacobBerland,CEO,presentedtheautonomouspower-lineinspectionsolutionby BergenRoboticsAS.Hediscussedthecapabilitiesofthedrone-basedsystem,andthe hurdlesencounteredonthewaytodevelopmentandrealdeployment.AudunSanderud, CEO,presentedthesocialroboticssolutionbyHiroFuturesAS.Hediscussedtheratio- naleandthetechnologybehindrobotsthatengagehumanlikebodylanguagetofacili- tatecommunicationandinteraction.AsgeirBerland,LeadDataScientist, presentedthe warehouse logisticsand groceries distributionsolutionbyOda AS.Hediscussedhow AIpowersefficientresourcemanagement, routeoptimization, anddistributionoffresh goodsinNorway. Thereafter, thethreecommercialrepresentatives, togetherwithFilippoSanfilippo, hadapaneldiscussionthatwasmoderatedbyTrymLindell,OsloMet.Amongstother things, the discussion revolved around the transformative power of AI for our soci- ety, andthepotentialforsignificantnewvaluecreation.Whatdecidesthetimelinefor deployment–isitmanagement, marketacceptance, ortechnicalmaturity?Thepanelists vi Preface discussed having underestimated various technical challenges that may appear trivial but can delay or even hamper real deployments. Aspects that are trivial for humans are extremely challenging in artificial systems, where a reliable and safe operation is requiredinthevicinityofhumans.Explainability, trustworthiness, safety, andregulation were mentioned as important stepstones. In addition, the discussion touched upon the effectofAI-uptakeonthejobmarket–ourpanelistsseemedtoagreethatrobotswill beassignedtheboringrepetitivetasksandallowthehumanstoshine.Overall, thepanel shednewandinsightfullightonimportanttopicsaroundtheroadmaptowardsreal-life deployment. Twotechnicalsessionsfollowed, oneonRoboticsandIntelligentSystemsthatwas chairedbyKaiOlavEllefsen,UniversityofOslo, andoneonAIinCyberandDigital SpherethatwaschairedbyLotharFritch,OsloMet.Thefirstdaywasroundedoffbythe secondkeynoteon“AIResearchandEurope’sUpcomingAILaw”byTobiasMahler, UniversityofOslo.ThekeynotediscussedthelegalregulationofAIthatisunderdevel- opmentinEurope, theArtificialIntelligenceAct(AIA),sheddinglightonwhetherthe law, if adopted, will facilitate the creation of trustworthy AI in Europe, or whether it mightlimitEurope’sabilitytodevelopcompetitiveAIsystems.Thekeynoteledtoan engagingdiscussioninplenum, whereamongotherthings, whatisdefinedasAIinthe regulationaswellassecurityandsafetyaspectsseemedtointeresttheaudience.After- wards, theNorwegianAISocietyhadashortGeneralAssemblymeeting, andthenthe participantswalkeddowntotheNorwegianOperaandBalletandenjoyedagooddinner atBrasserieSanguine. Three tutorials were offered. The first one took place prior to the main event on themorningofthefirstday;itwasentitled“SearchAlgorithmsinAIwithPython”and deliveredbybyRashmiGuptaandMortenGoodwin,UniversityofAgder.Theothertwo tutorialstookplaceinparallelaftertheendofthemainevent, ontheafternoonofdaytwo. WearegratefultotheNorwegianResearchCouncilforfundingtheevent, whichdid notrequireafeethisyear.Thesuccessofthesymposiumwouldnotbepossiblewithout thehelpofmanycolleagues.WewouldliketothanktheTechnicalProgramCommittee forreviewingthepapersandgivingfeedbacktotheauthors.TheOrganizingCommittee from OsloMet and SimulaMet acted, in effect, as the event Program Committee, and we would like to thank all colleagues for their commitment. We are grateful to the ArtificialIntelligenceLab,theDepartmentofComputerScience, andtheDepartmentof Mechanical,Electronics, andChemicalEngineeringatOsloMetforsupportingtheevent. WealsothanktheCourseandConferenceCentre(KK-senter)andTechnicalSupportat OsloMetfortheirvaluableassistance.
