The book concludes with descriptions of procedures relevant to the peritoneal cavity because of its intimate relationship to the intra-abdominal portion of these organs. Not infrequently, the percutaneous or transluminal methods described in this text have replaced more traditional surgical approaches. However, the complexity of certain gastrointestinal disorders frequently demands a multidisciplinary focus to best serve the patient. Management of gastrointestinal bleeding is such an exam- ple. The authors of the first chapter—a gastroenterologist, a radiologist, and a sur- geon—combine their experiences to offer insight into this challenging problem. Subsequent chapters cover the remarkable progress radiologists have made in- tervening in the digestive tube from the hypopharynx to the colon, and we are fortunate to have many of those responsible for these advances as contributing authors. The figures were chosen to provide enough detail to radiologists inter- ested in attempting those procedures, and the text should convey the judgment and technical insight necessary to perform them successfully. We are indebted to the authors for investing the time and effort to help compile this information. Our hope is that radiologists will find the material in this book to be useful in their clinical practice and of benefit to their patients. Jeffrey C. Brandon, M.D. Steven K. Teplick, M.D. ix
