During the five years that have elapsed between the publication of "The lnnerworld of the Outerworld of the Innerworld" and "Nonsense and Happiness", Peter Handke found a way of writing far more directly and subtly than in his first book of poems - yet just as dramatically. In "Nonsense and Happiness" the theme of the title is sustained and elaborated at a successively deeper and more ambitious level in three long poems of nearly equal length written at roughly one year intervals. Whereas one might regard "Life Without Poetry," the first of these poems, as the most intimate of the three, and "Blue Poem" as transitional, "Nonsense and Happiness" gives a highly orchestrated and objectified voice to the excruciatingly painful, frequently ludicrous as well as maddening, touching quest for meaning. Added to the book is Handke's most recent poem, "The End of Idling," consisting of eighteen concise, epiphanic stanzas.
Peter Handke is the author of such widely acclaimed books as "Kaspar and Other Plays", "The Ride Across Lake Constance", "They Are Dying Out", "The Goalie's Anxiety at the Penalty Kick", "Short Letter", "Long Farewell", and "A Sorrow Beyond Dreams".
