With a record of 6 & 2 and first place still in sight, a combination oftwo forfeits and three road losses took the Knights out ofthe playoff picture. They bounced back to close out the season on a positive note with a win in a strong showing in front oftheir home fans. This was a team built around athletes who were dedicated, hard working and represented Niagara College with pride. Their record is not a true indication of how good this team was this season. 4 1 5 m H fii & Ilk kH 1 1W'?S/*' ' m /’• j 1F .Ai. ?*•i, -‘*tp i1 i|' p ijm1e-/* ®/|Fj nf11HiIra* 'A't'V/^V.f/ .if|l|ff|l;f VARSITY WOMEN'S BASKETBALL 2000 200 - S FrontRow(L-R): DinaNiejadlik(AssistantCoach), ChristinaCasciani, KatyStill, Tasha Warwick, CandaceOxford, MistyWilliamson, CeorgieCroat(HeadCoach) BackRow(L-R): AmandaMarazzo(Manager),AlexisFulop, MirandaHubbs, JocelynSinclair-Chavez,JanaDouglas, LindseyCroulx, CarrieStratford, KellyLewis, Absent: LesBarrett(Manager) ALL-STAR GAME REPRESENTATIVES: Jana Douglas, Kelly Lewis, Carrie Stratford TEAM MVP: Jana Douglas Season Highlights Despite our record, the women’s basketball team had a very successful season this year. With only four returning players, the rookies had to adjust quickly to the college style of play. We played many close games with the top teams in the league but didn’t come away with the win. The team proved to themselves that they have the potential to be a contender in this league in the upcoming year. With the majority ofthe players returning next year, look for the Knights to be a contender in playoffs next season! 5 ) VARSITY MEN’S VOLLEYBALL 2000 2001 - FRONTROW(L-R) : MikeKing,JoshGunnell, ChrisHeideman, CuneytAkgol, RyanStovold, MattVeenendaal, BradHarrietha BACKROW(L-R) : BlairCudmore(HeadCoach), NathanMarcon, GraemeGaunt, CoryLahey, AndrewChatel, ShawnBarbisan,JasonReimer, RuyanBaltare, BillLang, KerbyBentley(AssistantCoach) Absent: JustinRoss OCAA WEST REGION & GOLD MEDAL CHAMPIONS CCAA CHAMPIONSHIP 1st TEAM ALL-STAR: Graeme Gaunt OCAA LEAGUE ALL-STAR: Graeme Gaunt OCAA ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Graeme Gaunt (January I 5, 2001 OCAA WEST REGION COACH OF THE YEAR: Blair Cudmore OCAA CHAMPIONSHIP ALL-STARS: Cory Lahey, Josh Gunnell, Graeme Gaunt - MVP ALL-STAR GAME REPRESENTATIVES: Graeme Gaunt, Josh Gunnell OCAA SOURCE FOR SPORTS TEAM OF THE WEEK: February 2 & February 26, 200 I 1 TEAM MVP: Josh Gunnell LEAGUE RECORD: 15 & 0 Season Highlights Playing in one ofthe toughest volleyball leagues in the country, the Knights would have to overcome a lot of obstacles to successfully defend as the OCAA and West Region Champions. They had to replace two ofthe best players in the starting lineup in Matt Piccolo and Cameron Jacobs. Not only were they able to replace both players but also added some much-needed depth to the lineup. They cruised through the season going undefeated for the first time in the history ofthe program and continued that streak into the OCAA Championships as they repeated as Gold Medal Champions. They were ranked as high as #3 in the nation going into the CCAA championships. They took another run at the bronze medal but had to settle for fourth in the nation with an outstanding record of 22 and 2. This marks the end ofthe road for veterans Bill Lang, Cory Lahey and Cuneyt Akgol, and on behalf of the Knights we want to wish them the very best in their future endeavors. 6 WOMEN VARSITY VOLLEYBALL S 2000 2001 - FrontRow(L-R): KateJansen, DianeVandenHoven, CinniLlord, HeatherRichardson, KellyannMartindale BackRow(L-R) : KellyDavies, ThaisAun,AmyHamon, NicoleCarleton-Burnham, LindsayKelly,AnnaDick, Carolyn Welden (HeadCoach) Absent: LauraChatterton(AssistantCoach) OCAA LEAGUE ALL-STARS: Diane VandenHoven ALL STAR GAME REPRESENTATIVES & DREAM TEAM: Diane VandenHoven TEAM MVP: Kelly Davies LEAGUE RECORD: 9 & 5 Season Highlights A year oftransition, the women’s volleyball team overcame every obstacle thrown their way. The season began with 2 skilled athletes and slowly they 1 became a team of 8. The biggest set back was losing their veteran setter to a season ending injury. During the next four weeks other team members who could not handle the pressure of intercollegiate sports and academics withdrew from the program, and consequently a stronger team emerged. A slow start to the season resulted in a 3-0 record to close out the first half. The second half of the season resulted in a lot of travel and the team bonded and gelled during this time. The result was a six game winning streak that secured the final playoff position in the west region. The Knights ended their season 9-5, with numerous accomplishments, league all stars, mvp’s of tournaments, and ranking ninth in the province. 7 VARSITY CURLING 2000 - 2001 Front(L-R): TinaBrochu, DanaOliver,StaceySolvason, SheriCruhl Back (L-R): DerekMartin,JeffYoung,Jordan Thin, DavidMedlyn, KevinPoulin, ScottBanner(Coach) TEAM MVP: David Medlyn SEASON HIGHLIGHTS This years curling team was respectful at the Ontario College Athletic Association championships placing 5th in the men’s division after a second place finish at the regionals. This combined with the fact that we hosted the O.C.A.A. Tournament at Whirlpool Golf Course resulted in one of the most successful Knights Golf seasons in many years. This was also the first year we had a female representative on the GolfTeam. All these positive factors contributed to increased interest in try-outs for the golfteam and a bronze medal for the Men’s Team at the O.C.A.A. Championships. Kudos to all involved. Next year we are going for gold. 8
