The Niagara Advance Parents give www.niagaraadvance.ca TThhuurrssddaayy,, JJaan uary 6,2011 back Innocent play ► ends in tragedy for Chautauqua family. Niagara Advance No one knows exactly how long Porter Irving was in the frigid water Tuesday evening before his friends noticed he was missing. One minute he was playing on the ice off the beach at Ryerson Park with a group of boys from his Chautauqua neighbourhood, the next, his friends realized they couldn’t find him and raced to tell his dad, Ian Irving. His mother, Deanna Simpson Irving, was in Calgary on business. As his parents grieved in their Dixie Avenue home aunt, Jennifer Simpson, spoke on their behalf. Porter was an "action man.” A middle child, he was always out to slay dragons, liked to sword-fight, and play with his favourite Yu-Gi-Oh cards, a Japanese collectible card game. He was also a cuddler who loved family gatherings. He liked to ride his bike, cheer on the Ottawa Senators with his dad, and cook roasted pota¬ toes with his mom. He was a much-loved child. But Tuesday he was doing what kids in the neighbour¬ hood do, even when warned by their parents to stay off the ice, says local Tom Braybrook.
