News Week 7 - Term 2 Monday 16 June - Sunday 22 June This Week >> Issue 17 2014 From the desk of... Brendan Kelly Senior School Principal Learning About Ourselves Sometimes our parents have a lot to answer for, whether it is in passing on a gene that we didn’t really want, or shaping our environment to produce a certain learned behaviour. I first fully understood this back in 1982. It was school sports day and I had two unfortunate inherited characteristics that subjected me to misery on that sunny February afternoon. Firstly, I had the physique of a skinny boy of Celtic descent. Possessing transparent skin I was often sunburned to a crisp by merely stepping outside. Secondly, I was an introvert who had been brought up to always “do the right thing”, no matter how much ridicule such a pathway could attract. This is actually a noble characteristic, yet to a 16 year old facing certain embarrassment such silent stoicism felt more like a curse. My particular Waterloo was something I’ll never forget. We all had to do at least one track and one field event and I chose discus throw. The fact that I was no good at discus was unfortunate, and sadly my surname also followed someone who was very good indeed. Brad was a big boy for his age, and his sporting prowess was legendary. After leaving school he played professional rugby league, and was one of those chaps who in whatever sport he turned his hand to, was instantly better than everyone else. So when Mr Craighead helpfully announced “students should go over to the discus ring to see Bradley J” - who had broken the school record with his first throw - huge crowds turned up. As they settled down to watch, Brad stepped up again to the circle and proceeded to effortlessly hurl the discus what looked like a mile, and certainly much closer to the staff car park than teachers had expected. Huge applause broke out and the interested crowd now stayed to see what came next. I was promptly announced and with arms that looked more like twigs I stepped forward to complete my throw, gleaming pink from a day in the sun. Hoping for a massive tailwind I swung with my full effort but unfortunately it was a still day, and my best was completely feeble in light of Brad’s gigantic throw. As the discus dropped with a plop barely a third the distance of my tanned and muscular friend, 200 of my peers broke into uninhibited guffaws of laughter. Embarrassed and humiliated I slunk out of the circle and sat down with my few remaining friends. “Gee I’m glad that wasn’t me,” said Dave. We had to do three throws in all, so I stepped up one more time for what was now my ritualistic ignominy. While my mates and fellow competitors had long since melted into the crowd of spectators, I knew I had to keep coming back for more. I like to think that I endured well the mockery of the next few weeks. When the posters advertising teachers college were put up around school, they had a picture of a happy teacher instructing a small class of smiling children. Some wag drew a speech bubble coming from one of the students with the words “teach us how to throw the discus Mr Kelly”. I mention this story because so often teenagers feel really bad about what they have inherited, and sometimes wish they were like someone else. While sporting envy is an obvious one, I see this most persistently in the introverted. The shy and quiet person who wishes they were much more confident, and are envious of their popular and extroverted peers. In her book “QUIET: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking” Susan Cain shouts out for those of us who want to process things before they articulate them, who value solitude over crowds and who see introspection, focus and observation as strengths that can be celebrated. It is very easy in our current media-driven world to think that all young people should aspire to be sporting heroes or charismatic leaders. Similarly, in education, we rightly praise risk-taking. But there is also great value in “heed taking”, and quiet solitude is a powerful catalyst for innovation. On that discus day of 1982, I also ran the 1500 metres. It was an event that suited the skinny, and my winning time still stands as a school record. Introverts enjoy running, and I’m deeply grateful that I have the genetic make-up to be good at it. Hours of training are perfect solitude, and a great way to organise your thoughts. Week 7 - Term 2 Monday 16 June - Sunday 22 June >> Issue 17 2014 Just to let you know... Science Experiments in Year 5 Year 5’s unit of inquiry, How the World Works, required students to take part in experiments based around chemical and physical change. Playing with stuff in class at Year 5, yes school IS fun! Slip, slop, slap, 5B were not taking part in a sunsmart campaign. They enjoyed the pleasures of playing with cornflour mixed with water. Students played with it, experimented with it and then did the paperwork. Year 5 students are following many of Steve Spangler’s experiments. Deciding and proving which experiments are reversible (physical) and which are irreversible (chemical change). Before the fun, a hypothesis was necessary. Mrs Bull took photos to record the observations and ideas, as hands were terribly messy! Finally, an explanation was written about why the cornflour and water mixed together ended up the way it did! All students’ will be participating in a coke and mentos experiment, making a snowflake with borax and putting an egg into vinegar and recording the reaction. It is all going to be very exciting. 5B wonders, are there more experiments we can have fun with? Things to note... Year 9 Reading Day Friday 6 June was the for our gigantic adventure through the world of books, and Year 9 Reading Day started and finished with a bang! Having author Brian Falkner talk to us about his experiences with story writing got everyone inspired. He was a great speaker and was very entertaining, we sure learnt a lot. After reading our chosen stories to the Kindy and Junior School children, the Year 9s all felt like giants and were blown away by the fact that these little kids were so advanced. In Period 3, Mr Kelly, Mr Heath, Mr Clague, Mrs Patchett, Mr Gurney and other teachers shared their favourite books with us; not all of us would have read them but they each captivated us by reading extracts of their stories. We finished with wonderful games that Brian Falkner was hosting. These ‘Story Sports’ were challenging and we were all very enthusiastic and competitive. This wonderful event couldn’t have happened without Mrs Mansfield and all of the teachers who put a lot of effort towards this day and we are very grateful. Teri Marinus Year 10 Trip to Whangarei On Thursday 12 June, the Year 10 Community and Service team went on a trip to Whangarei to help projects and initiatives that we have been supporting throughout the year. The day started bright and early at 7am as the group travelled on the bus to Whangarei. We first got our hands dirty and did some gardening at the local Whangarei community garden, doing various tasks ranging from harvesting kumara and planting seeds to weeding. What a great sense of satisfaction we felt as we took in the new look of the gardens. We then visited a lovely marae and learnt about projects within Whangarei that have had a positive effect on the whole community. This was followed by our visit to the Octane Youth Health Centre. This is a clinic in Whangarei that the Community and Service team have been fundraising for throughout the year. The Health Centre is a free clinic where everything from health care, counselling and social work is provided for the youth of the area. In the afternoon we promoted the Health Centre by handing out pamphlets and talking to the public in the town centre. This was a lovely way to end our day. With mud on our knees and our eyes struggling to stay open, we slowly made our way back to Auckland. Overall it was a very successful day and our team learnt a lot about supporting a community. Alisha Siraj Ronald McDonald House On Monday 9 June, the Middle School Student Council helped relieve the parents of sick children at Starship Hospital from the chore of preparing the evening meal. The 16 students happily rolled up their sleeves and donned their aprons alongside Mr Haslam, Mr Gurney and assorted volunteers from the Kristin community. After piling off the bus, the group entered the pristine kitchen of Ronald McDonald House, washed their hands and waited for instructions from head chef and amazing kitchen coordinator, Mrs Macpherson. She allocated the cooks-to-be an assortment of different roles ranging from carrot peeling to tomato cleaning, all resulting in a lot of fun. When the bulk of the preparation was over, the Week 7 - Term 2 Monday 16 June - Sunday 22 June >> Issue 17 2014 entire council played a game of catch with some of the children at the centre, who displayed impressive rugby skills in addition to incredibly cheerful attitudes. When the families arrived, they were delighted to be treated to dinner.
