News Archives - 2012 / 2013 ARCHIVE Summer holidays 1. The school is now closed for the summer holidays. 2. Offices will re-open on Monday, 12 August. 3. Any matters requiring urgent attention before 12 August can be posted to the school, marked for the attention of the Principal, or sent by e-mail to [email protected] 4. Leaving Certificate results will be available for collection in the school between 9.00 a.m. and 1.00p.m. on Wednesday, 14 August. Wednesday, 5 June to Friday, 21 June The school extends its best wishes to all students who will be sitting their Junior and Leaving Certificate examinations during this period of time. We hope that the hard work put in by students and teachers in preparations for these examinations will now pay dividends. The teacher-in-charge of examination arrangements for the school is Sr. Christine to whom all examination-related enquiries should be directed. The school‟s support services remain in force throughout the examination period for any student who may need any assistance/advice. News Update 16 Paired reading Transition year students and first year students who participated in this year‟s Paired Reading Programme were awarded with their certificates this last week of term. This is the third year that the programme has run in our school. Paired Reading aims to help students foster a love of reading in an enjoyable and relaxed atmosphere as well as affording all students the opportunity to forge new friendships. Cora Murphy, 1st Year pictured with her Paired Reading certificate. First year tutees from left to right: Jordy Sheridan, Sinéad Ronan-John, Aoife Whitty, Jayne Harrison, Aoise Meyler and Katie Sweeney. The students met for 15-20 minutes at lunchtime from Tuesday to Friday during the first term. First years picked a book that interested them from the Paired Reading box in TB3 and then read with their TY tutor for the duration. The programme went on up until Christmas and finished up with a Paired Reading Party in the lunch room where students enjoyed games, sweets and general festive cheer. Some students volunteered to continue to read with their tutor for the duration of the school year. Unfortunately not every TY student who trained had the opportunity to put their skills into practice in school but some TY tutors brought their skills to the wider community by helping younger neighbours and friends with their reading outside school time. Some of this year's TY tutors: Back row left to right: Naoise Brennan, Patrice O'Gorman, Gillian MacDonald, Bethany Sheridan. Front row left to right: Emma Carroll, Orlagh Barry, Eimear O'Brien As the Paired Reading Co-ordinator, I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the students who were so generous with their time and committed to the idea of reading for enjoyment. I hope the programme has instilled in you a love of reading that will remain long after you leave Loreto. Well done girls! PRIZEGIVING 2013 OPENING PRAYER – FR. When she retired, she presented this silver cup to the school, as a perpetual English trophy. For her enthusiastic participation in class and obvious love of the English language as well as all the hard work and dedication she has shown, this student was the obvious choice. Her contributions are insightful, particularly in poetry, and she definitely has a way with words! Congratulations to this year‟s recipient, Róisín Kavanagh. MUSIC - Sr. Mary Walshe Memorial Cup for Music Sr. Mary taught music and choir in the Loreto, Wexford for many years. When she died in November 2003, it was decided to present the Sr. Mary Walshe Memorial Cup each year to a student who studied music in Loreto and achieved a very high standard. The award is to remind us of the great contribution Sr. Mary made to music in the school and in Wexford. This year‟s recipient has shown great commitment and dedication to both her music studies and as a member of the school choir and orchestra during her six years in Loreto. Our under 16s unluckily were beaten by a point against Coláiste Bríd, while despite our under 14 team losing in group stages, our first years went on to win the first year blitz held in Pairc Gharman last week, which bodes very well for the future. But the footballing highlight has to go to our seniors. After a lot of tough trainings and matches over the last two years, for most of the panel, their reward came on 4th of December 2012 when they claimed Loreto, Wexford‟s first Senior ”A” Leinster title in 15 years against Coláiste Iosagáin by a score line of 1-09 to 0-08 points. Special mention must go to Julie Coakley who received the player of the match award, thanks in no small part to her contribution of 6 points on the day. Despite the team‟s subsequent defeat in the All-Ireland semi-final in March to Athenry of Galway, nothing can take away from the girls‟ efforts and commitment to the cause and determination right up until the final seconds of their last game. The panel of 26 girls were already presented with their Leinster Cup and medals earlier this year. The captain Niamh Crosbie was presented with a token of our appreciation for all the effort and work that they put in.
