Volume XIII, Issue 1 May 2013 WHS Alumni & Friends Newsletter New Website for Arrow Education Foundation by Pam Raeder Now it is easier than ever to locate the Arrow Education Foundation (AEF) news at www.watertown.k12.sd.us! AEF has become a part of the Watertown School District website. Not only will alumni be able to find Foundation information, but they’ll also be able to tap into news from each school in the district, check athletic schedules, employment opportunities, board meetings, staff information and much more from just one site. It’s easy to find and bookmark. Log in to www.watertown.k12.sd.us and scroll to the second tab on the left side under Arrow Ed Foundation. Click, and from here you’ll find tabs across the top that will take you to information on planned giving, alumni reunions, reunion planning guides and the annual HARVEST event to name just a few. In this money- saving move, the AEF Board of Directors approved joining the school district’s website not only to make it more convenient to locate all things related to AEF, but all things related to Watertown High School and the Watertown School District as well. Check it out at: www.watertown.k12.sd.us, or our direct website address: www.tinyurl.com/ArrowFoundation. Tech Staff To Attend Conference The Watertown Tech Department grant funds will be used by district tech coaches and tech staff to attend national conferences, such as the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) Forging the Frontier conference in Texas this summer. Our coaches are often so busy providing trainings that they do not have the opportunity to participate in trainings themselves. Attendance at a national conference such as ISTE will expose them to all that is new in the world of technology. The tech coaches will be able to bring innovative ideas back to influence instruction and integration at every level. By attending as a team, we will be able to share ideas and develop plans specific to our needs, learning together for the good of the entire district. Customized Learning provides each student within the program the ability to take courses at the pace they want to take them, during the school year, during Dr. Lesli (Eggen) Jutting ‘80 the summer time when the days get long and online anytime/anywhere. This vision of a customized learning opportunity for every student is not far off, but one that we are planning to make a reality as we move forward in educating all students to succeed in this ever- changing world. The industrial model of education is difficult to maintain with the customization our students and parents are used to having. For example, how many of you have your own applications on your smart phone, your own music in your iTunes library, your own book suggestions from Amazon.com as you order your book collections, or your own distinct cabinetry in your kitchens (hundreds to choose from)? I think you get the picture of customized learning from what we already customize in our world. One of the goals of the Arrow Education Foundation (AEF) is to help our district become the best it can become and embark on opportunities that the general budget cannot afford. And, its goal is also to help fund and create educational opportunities in the Watertown School District second to none in this state, region, and country. The AEF Board of Directors has agreed to begin a fundraising campaign to help Watertown High School create customized learning opportunities for our students. This customized learning opportunity will be offered to a small group of about 65 to 75 students who choose to go to school anytime/anywhere and progress at their own learning pace. What does customized learning look like? The students who petition into the program would work with four teachers who will individualize the curriculum for each student and create learning plans which allow him or her to work at his or her learning pace. Students will advance through high school determined by their learning motivation and begin college/technical classes as a part of their learning plan during their high school years at Watertown High School. It is possible that students may receive a diploma from high school and have a two year technical degree or two years of college when they graduate from high school. The AEF is working to provide start-up funds to pay for the four additional teachers to begin these opportunities (learning objectives seminars, mentorships with businesses/community, working individually on academic needs, goal setting, etc.) and help with on-going costs to pay for the dual credit classes at Lake Area Technical Institute, Mount Marty College, Northern State University, and South Dakota State University. This program will definitely help our district become the premiere school district in the state, region, and country. I am hoping you seriously think about helping with this important project when asked to donate. Giving back to “home” will make a difference to our students and the greatness of Watertown High School that we all remember. Customizing learning for our students will help our students succeed in the customized world in which they already live. And, most importantly, allow our mission to continue to guide the path of enabling ALL students to succeed in an ever-changing world. “Education cannot sit in this customized world as an island, embracing the Industrial Age, and expect to survive.” “Restoring the Tradition” Arrow Football Game Films to DVDs Order Form Thanks to a gift from the family and friends of Rick D. It’s Easy and It “Pays” To Get Involved In March of 2012, the Arrow Education Foundation launched a new program called the “144 Club” to generate new resources to support staff and students in the district as our professional teachers strive “to enable all students to succeed in an ever-changing world.” We did this by asking alumni and friends to consider a tax-deductible contribution of $144 per year/per graduate to help with our plan to continue as a partner in the educational process in Watertown schools. These funds are currently earmarked for scholarships, professional development opportunities for staff, and technology upgrades in classrooms. “144” stands for Watertown School District 14-4. But you know that Watertown High School stands for so much more than just a great education — it stands for a place to safely test personal ideas, a stepping stone to future endeavors, and a place where life-long friendships are formed. Continuing to build upon these “Arrow Pride” dreams, the 144 Club appeal raised more than $20,000! Now, in the spirit of the 144 Club, the AEF and School District are moving forward with a “Middle College” program that will require funds that are beyond the scope of the regular school budget. (Please see Dr. Jutting’s article describing this program on page 3.) Our goal is to raise $180,000 and the Arrow Education Foun- dation has a plan to help meet these needs…THE GREAT 144 CLUB CLASS CHALLENGE!!! This year, AEF is issuing a friendly challenge to all WHS alumni to participate by donating to the 144 Club 2013. Between January 1, 2013 and September 1, 2013, the graduation year with the highest number of participating classmates will not only have top billing throughout all of Arrow-dom, but will have the privilege of knowing that they have helped shape the future of education in Watertown. BUT WAIT – THERE’S MORE!!! In appreciation of your efforts, the Arrow Education Foundation will provide $500 to be used toward your next class reunion gathering. NOT ONLY THAT–AEF will also provide an additional $500 to the class with the most dollars raised! Your class could win both cash prizes! That underwrites a lot of fun! (Use the form below or go to our new website to make your pledge.) Thanks so much to those who donated to this appeal in 2012. We know that you’ll want to continue to be part of this worthwhile challenge. Together, we can help customize learning opportunities for our students! Thank you! May the class with the most commitment to education win! THE GREAT 144 CLUB 2013 CLASS CHALLENGE!!! PLEASE PRINT Name WHS Grad Yr.
