We want to celebrate, with this book, his scienti(cid:12)c and scholarly achievements, the inspirational quality of his teaching, his graciousness as a colleague, his thoughtful guidance of graduated students, his service to the department, the university and the physics community at large, his open, courteous, easy accessibility to anyone needing his counsel or expertise. This book contains original and peer-reviewed articles from his friends, colleagues, and former students, and represents a unique collection of papers on statistical physics and related subjects. We would like to express our gratitude to everyonewho contributed to this homage volume. This endeavor could not have been realized without the (cid:12)nancial sup- port of Dr. Jos(cid:19)e Lema{Labadie, President of the Universidad Auto(cid:19)noma Metropolitana, and Dr. Oscar Monroy{Hermosillo, Rector of the campus Iztapalapa of the same university, we thank very grateful them for spon- soring this international and multidisciplinary endeavor. We hope that this volume will serve to foster the impressive growth of statistical physics in our region, and additionally to reinforce the already existingstrongtiesbetweenMexicanscientistsandtheircolleaguesinother parts of the world. There, he began his dedicated career as a teacher and researcher and started an importantresearchprogramonthebroadareaofStatisticalMechanics,Ki- neticTheory,IrreversibleThermodynamics,CriticalPhenomena,Chemical Physics, and other related subjects. Prof. Garcia{Colin has been recog- nized as the founder of Statistical Physics research in Mexico. Upon his return to Mexico in 1960 he faced the very hard duty of con- structing totally new research groups in those (cid:12)elds of Sciences cultivated by him. This was an exhausting task, demanding time, e(cid:11)ort, and an insight in the development of high level Educative Institutions, and Gov- ernmentLaboratorieswith asolidscienti(cid:12)cbasis. His researchinterests encompass many areasof Physics and Chemical{ Physics,likestatisticalphysicsofnon-equilibriumsystems,non{linearirre- versible thermodynamics, kinetic theory of gases and plasmas, phase tran- sitions, non{linear hydrodynamics, and glass transition. He is author of more than 240 research papers, 60 on popular science, 17 books dealing with thermodynamics, statistical mechanics, non{equilibrium phenomena, and quantum mechanics. His textbook on Classical Thermodynamics is well known in Spanish speaking countries. Along many years, beside the (cid:12)elds previously mentioned, his scien- ti(cid:12)c interests have spurred important incursions into protein folding and transport theory in Astrophysics and Cosmology, Air Pollution Problems, SciencePolicy, andEducationalResearch. Hehasmaintainedacontinuous correspondencewithmanyscientistsandtravelsfrequentallovertheworld. He is an active member of various prestigious International Societies, like the Third World Academy of Sciences, for instance, since 1988. Hehasbeenanenthusiasticsupporterforbookediting, andconferences organization, such as the well known Mexican Meeting on Mathematical andExperimentalPhysics,whichstartedin2001andisalreadyinitsfourth edition. He was founder and Professor of Physics of the Escuela Superior de F(cid:19)(cid:16)sicay Matema(cid:19)ticasatthe National PolytechnicalInstitute (IPN) (1960{ 1963). Subsequently, he went to the Universidad Auto(cid:19)noma de Puebla (1964{1966),and then to the Sciences Faculty of the UNAM (1967{1984). He was researcher at the National Institute for Nuclear Research (ININ) (1966{1967), and thereafter he became Head of the Processes Basic Re- search Section at Mexican Petroleum Institute (1967{1974). In 1974, he started the Department of Physics and Chemistry at UAM{Iztapalapa as Head(1974{1978). His work has been recognized through several honors and awards, among them the Physics Award form the University of Maryland (1956{1957), the Prize in Exact Sciences of awarded by the now Mexican Academy of Sciences (1965), and the Merit Medal from the UniversidadAuto(cid:19)nomadePuebla(1965).
