Imagesandmapsaccompanythedescriptionsanddiscussionsofthesetaxa. JusdciaL.isthelargestgenusofAcanthaceaewithmorethan700speciescur- rentlyrecognizedworldwide.Theseincludesome100speciesfromMexico(Daniel, unpubl.).RecentstudiesofAcanthaceae,especiallyfromsouthernMexico,continue torevealundescribedtaxainthisremarkablyspecies-richgenus(e.g.,Daniel 1999, 2002,2003;Daniel etal.2005).Infact,22species ofJusticiaweredescribedfrom Mexicobetween1995and2006(IPNI2006),andatleast10othersawaitpublication. JiisticiacymidiferacanbedistinguishedfromotherspeciesofJusticiainMexico by its peduncLihite cymulcs (with the outercymule bracteolesdeltate tocordate) bearingrelativelylong,orange-redcorollas.Superficiallyitresemblesseveralspecies ofDklipteradue tothe presence ofsimilarcymules. Itcan be distinguished from speciesofthatgenusbyitsyoungstems,whicharesubteretetoquadrate-sulcate(vs. generally hexagonal in Dicliptera),lowerthecawith aconspicuous basal append- age(vs.basalappendagesabsentinDicliptera),andpollenwithinsulaepresent(vs. insulaeabsentinDicliptera).Althoughcapsulesremainunknown for./.cymulifera. in capsules ofJusticia the placentas do not separate from the inner capsule wall as they do in Dicliptera. A morphologically similarspecies that occurs at higher elevations (ca. 1200m) in Guatemala,/peclicellata D.N.Gibson,also hassimilar cymules.3-aperturatepollen (withaperturesflankedbyasinglerowofinsulaeon eachside),andrelativelylong,redcorollas.Capsulesareknownforthatspecies,and theyresemblethosefoundinotherspeciesoiJusiiciaratherthanthoseofDicliptera. Thesetwocymule-bearingspeciesoiJusticiafromnorthern LatinAmericacanbe distinguishedbythefollowingcouplet. Phenology.Flowering:March. Distribution (Fig.3).KnownonlyfromsouthernVeracruzwhereplantsoccur onkarst (limestone)inlowlandrainforestsofthe Uxpanaparegionatelevations of120m. JusticiakarsticolaisknownonlyfromthemoistUxpanapalowlandsofVeracruz. Thisregion ofhighprecipitationanddiverserainforestsinsoutheasternVeracruz andadjacentOaxacaisacenterforendemicanddisjuncttaxa(Wendt1987,1997). Withtherecognitionofboth/cymuliferaand/.karsticolafromtheUxpanaparegion, atleast 13speciesofthegenusareknownthere [also:,/.ardensT.F.Daniel,/hor- rerae(Hemsl.)T.F.Daniel,J.fimhriata(Nees)V.A.W.Graham,/.kanalT.F.Daniel, /lindeniana(Nees)J.F.Macbr.,/nevlingiiWassh.&T.F.Daniel,./,pectoralisJacq., /spicigeraSchltdl.,/uxpanapensisT.F.Daniel,/valvataT.F.Daniel,and/wendtii T.F.Daniel].Fourofthese,/cymulifera,].karsticola,J.uxpanapensis,and/wendtii, appeartobeendemictotheregion.JusticiaardensisknownonlyfromtheUxpanapa lowlandsandtheadjacent(andgenerallysomewhathigherinelevation)Chimalapa regioninOaxaca.SeveralofthesespeciesofJusticiaoccuron,orarerestrictedto,the weatheredlimestone(karst)thatcharacterizeslargeportionsofthisregion. Theshortlateralbranchesintheinflorescenceof/karsticolaappearasspikes. Whethertheyaretruespikes(withindeterminategrowth)ormodifieddichasiathat exhibitsympodialgrowthresultinginspikelikeelongationsisnotknown.Likesev- eralotherspeciesfromtheNewWorld,./,karsticolahasfloralbractsheteromorphic atanode.DimorphicbractswerenotedbyGraham(1988)inaBrazilianspecies,/ scansilis(Rizzini)V.A.W.Graham,ofhersect.Orthotactus(Nees)V.A.W.Graham. Inthatspecies,however,thesterilebractsarebroadlyovatetocordateandthefer- tileonesarenarrowlyovatetolanceolate./iw/zdflkarsticoladiffersfromGraham's (1988)circumscriptionofsect.Orthotactusbyitscompoundinflorescence,bractsnot ovate,andpollenwiththreeapertures.Wasshausenand Daniel (1995)and Daniel (2002) discussed several heteromorphically bracteate species from Mesoamerica. MexicanspeciesofJusticiawithheteromorphicbractsinclude:/caudataA.Gray,./. cholT.F.Daniel,/karsticola,J.ttevlingiiWassh.&T.F.Daniel,/tuxtlensisT.FDan- iel,./,uxpanapensisT.FDaniel,and/wendtiiT.FDaniel.Justiciakarsticolaappears florallyandpalynologicallysimilarto./.wendtii;indeed,bothspecieswerecollected byWendtfromthesamelocality.Theycanbedistinguishedbythecharactersinthe followingcouplet. Adetaileddescription in Englishandan illustrationofthisspecieswere pro- videdbyDaniel(1995;66-67,Fig.17)underyi/.v^/aV/herpetacanthoides.Atthattime IenumeratedseveraldifferencesbetweenChiapancollectionsandthoseresembling thetypeof,/,herpetacanthoidesfromYucatan.Further,IindicatedthattheChiapan plantsinightrepresentaspeciesotherthan,/.herpetacanthoides,butthatfurtherstud- iesofthattaxonandseveralothers,includingBeloperoneblechioidesLeonard,would benecessarypriortomakingsuchadetermination.RecentstudiesofAcanthaceaein Honduras(Daniel2005)andtheYucatanPeninsula(Daniel,unpubl.)revealthatB. blechioidescorrespondstoaGuatemalanandHonduranspeciesthatisnowknown as./.ciriloiT.FDaniel,andthat/.herpetacanthoidesisnotdistinctfrom./.lundeUii Leonard.PlantsfromChiapasareheretreatedasadistinctspeciesendemictothat stateanddifferfromtiieYucatanPeninsularendemicJ.lundelliibythecharacters inthefollowingcouplet. A detailed description in English ofthis subspecies was provided by Daniel (1995: 57-58; as J. campechiana), who noted the distinctions between Chiapan plantsandthosefromtheYucatanPeninsulathatresemblethetype.Atthattime, thespecieswasinsufficientlyknowntomefromthroughoutitsrangetodetermine whether the more pubescent plants from Chiapas (and Guatemala) represented ageographicallycircumscribablepopulationornot.Recentstudiesofthisspecies from theYucatan Peninsularevealthatplantsfromeachregionindeedcomprise morphologically,geographically,andecologicallydistinctcomponentsofthespecies, bothofwhicharehereaccordedsubspecificstatus.Figure5illustratessomeofthe morphologicaldistinctionsbetweenthesubspecies,andFig.6showstheirrespective distributions;thefollowingcoupletsummarizessomeoftheirdifferences.
