Theinfillingthatresultsfrommorecollectorsvisitingmorelocalitieswithin therangesofthesecomplexeshasblurredtheboundariesbetweenmanyofthe proposedspeciesandoftenaddedformsthatdonotTit"thecharactersotnamed species.AsIfacedthechallengesofpreparingtheFNAtreatmentIrecognized thatmaintainingsomeofthenamedentitiesasspecieswouldforconsistency requireafurtherproliferationofspeciesnames. 1havechosentogotheotherwayInsteadcontinuingtheproliferationof ill-definedmicrospeciesItreattheplantsinquestionasrapidlyevolving,only partiallydifferentiatedassemblagesofracesthathavenotreachedthelevelof stabilitythatisusuallyassociatedwiththeconceptofspecies.Inamolecular phylogeneticinvestigationKelchandBaldwin(2003)foundunusuallylowrates KEIL,NEWTAXAANDNEWCOMBINATIONSINNORTHAMERICANCIRSIUM 209 ofmoleculardivergencerelativetotheecologicaldiversityof NewWorld Cirsiumandsuggestedthatthegenushasundergonearapidecologicaldiver- sificationonacontinentalscale.Certainlythereismuchvariationwithinthese groupsthatdeservesaleveloftaxonomicrecognition,orthatatleastshouldbe mentioned,butIthinkitmuchmoreprudenttorecognizetheseasinfraspe- cifictaxa—entitiesthatmaybeexpectedtofreelyintergrade—thanspecies.I viewspeciesasentitiesthatshouldbeconsistentlyrecognizable.Withinalarge genussuchasCirsiumtheamountofinfraspecificvariationandthedegreeof geographicalseparationamongracesvariesfromspeciestospeciesandfrom geographicalracetogeographicalrace.Racesoccupyingcontiguoushabitats oftenintergradefreelyinzonesofcontactwhereasracescurrentlyisolatedby geographicorhabitatbarriersoftenhavemorediscretevariationpatterns.Both situationsmayoccurinasinglespecies. InfraspecifictaxainCirsiumhavebeenrecognizedinvarioustaxaatthe rankofform,variety,andsubspecies.IntheFloraofNorthAmerica(Floraof NorthAmericaEditorialCommitteei996)thetrivialrankofform,represent- ingsporadicvariantswithoutageographicrange,isnotused.SomeCirsium variantsrecognizedmthe pastasvarietiesaretheequivalentofforms.In Cirsiumbothvarietyandsubspecieshavebeenusedinthecontextofmorpho- logicallydistinguishablegeographicalraces.Therankofvarietyhasbeenused morewidelyTheFloraofNorthAmericaGuideforContributors(FloraofNorth AmericaEditorialCommittee1996)stipulatesthatonlyoneinfraspecificrank (subspeciesorvariety)berecognizedwithinagenus.Asusedbymostworkers inCirsiumtaxonomythechoiceofrankhasbeenamatterofpreference,andI viewthemasequivalent.Ihavechosentousevarietyratherthansubspecies becauseonlyonechangefromsubspeciestovarietyhastobemadetofollow theFloraofNorthAmericaGuidelineswhereastheuseofsubspeciesasthe infraspecificrankforformallyrecognizedgeographicalraceswouldrequire manymorenomenclaturalinnovations.
