There are approximately 7000 entries ranging from everyday words to words ofmedium to advanced level difficulty. Each entry word in bold type in English is followed by a Somali phonetic pronunciation in brackets and italics: (italics), followed by an abbre- viation {n./oim, v./erb, adj./ective, etc.) to indicate the function of the word, and finally an explanation in Somali ofthe entry word. In some instances an example ofthe word in an English phrase or sentence is given to provide more clarity, and these phrases and sentences are underlined . Example; idle (aydal) adj. Shaqo la’aan, dhaqdhaqaaq darro; qofka aan shaqo rabin ee caajiska ah; (lacag) meel iska taal ama aan lagu shaqayn oo aan faaiido ku soo gelin: She has a lot of idle money in the bank Throughout the book you will find blank spaces on pages at the end of each letter ofthe alphabet, and at the end of the book some blank pages with the title ‘Addendum’. You could use these blank space and pages to store additional words and meanings that are most use- ful to you. VI Pronunciation: in compiling this dictionary, we have not felt it appropriate at this level to use the international phonetic alphabet and thereby to burden the user with another set ofthings to learn before being able to make an attempt at pronouncing English. In general, Somali phonetics have been used to represent the way in which Eng- lish words are pronounced. Since there are no Somali equivalents for some English sounds, the closest sound in Somali is substituted in many cases. The phonetics used, therefore, may only achieve an ap- proximation ofthe correct English sound. English sounds which have no equivalent in Somali are: p, v, z, th, ch. In the phonetic spellings the letter/ is used to represent both/and v in English, and the letter j to represent the sound forj and for ch (because c and h have two distinct sounds in Somali they cannot be used here in combination to represent the English ch^;. Althoughp does net occur in Somali (and a native speaker w'ould naturally substitute ^), the letter p occurs so frequently in English that it is necessary for even the begining speaker to learn this sound and so p has been used. Somali speakers will be familiar with z and th from their knowledge ofArabic and the Koran, Somali does so these, too, have been used in the phonetic spellings. not have the same combination ofconsonant clusters as English, and an extra vowel will thus intrude between certain consonant combina- acquaintance tions in the Somali phonetic transcriptions (see: (akweyntanis) n.; bless (beles) v.). Other pronunciation peculiarities will also be encountered. Finally, for the student, more help is at hand in achieving good pro- nunciation by asking for assistance from a teacher or English-speak- ing friend; for the teacher, the anomolies in phonetic transcription which have been pointed out above may be of assistance in under We standing where sound transfer problems can exist for the student. hope both student and teacher will find the dictionary useful.
