Vol. 109,No.3,May&June, 1998 177 NEW RECORDS OF JAPYGOIDEA FROM (HEXAPODA: DIPLURA) LOUISIANA, WITH NOTES ON BEHAVIOR 1 MarkA.Muegge?ChristopherE.Carlton^ ABSTRACT: Previous published records ofthe hexapod order Diplura from Louisiana have documentedonespecies.WeprovidecollectiondataforsevenspeciesofJapygoidea:fivewithin Japygidae andtwo within Parajapygidae.Twogeneraand four species ofLouisianaJapygidae are undescribed. Members ofJapygidae are saprophagous and predatory in feeding behavior. Cerciwerenotusedduringanyobservationsofpreycapture,butwereemployeddefensivelyas pincers. Japygoids are aprimitive groupofblind, flightlesshexapodsbelonging to the class Diplura. The bionomics of this obscure group of hexapods remain poorly known. Japygoids have been recorded primarily from mesic habitats beneath rocks, rotting logs, leaflitter, humus, and soil. Some species occur in xerichabitatsandthreespeciesareobligatecavernicoles(Muegge, 1992;Pages, 1972, 1977). Japygids are prone to extreme endemism (Allen, 1988; Muegge, 1992; Muegge and Bernard, 1989; Smith, 1960). Their relatively small size, wing- less andeyelessanatomy, andthe occurrence ofmost species inedaphichabi- tats contribute to this tendency toward endemism. Thus, while Diplura and similar cryptic organisms could be useful in providing insight into biogeo- graphicpatterns,particularly in identifyingareasofendemism,analmosttotal lack ofinformation abouttheirdistributions and regional diversity is abarrier to accomplishing this goal. The information presented here is part ofa con- tinuing effortto document the distributional patterns and systematic status of Japygoidea in North America and provide information about theirbiology. Voucher specimens of taxa reported here are deposited in the Louisiana StateArthropod Museum and the first author's collection. BEHAVIORAL NOTES Observations of behavior and examination of gut contents by one of us (MAM) indicate that Japygoids are generally saprophagous and predatory, pursuing and consuming live prey opportunistically. ThejapygidMetajapyxremingtoniSmithandBoltonwasobservedduring prey stalking and capture.The long musculated antennae were used to search forprey. Once a potential prey item was detected, the animal slowly crept to withinstrikingdistance,thenlungedforwardtocapture,subdue,andconsume the prey. Individuals ofM. remingtoni were observed capturing and consum- ing entomobryid springtails. The feeding habits ofJapyx sp. were studied by Pages(1951),whoreportedpredationonanisopod,Platyarthrushoffmanseggti Brandt and the following gut contents: isopods, mites (mainly oribatids and gamasids), Symphyla, japygids, Diptera larvae, adult beetles, vegetable de- bris, and mycelia. Schaller (1968) described the use of forceps during prey capture and depicted it in a pair ofdrawings, but provided no observational dataorreferences tosupportthedescription.Kuhnelt(1976)publishedasimi- lar drawing depicting the capture of a campodid dipluran using the forceps. Finally, Conde and Pages (1991) reported that individuals ofHeterojapyx sp. were observed buried in soil with cerci exposed, waiting to capture small arthropods thatcame withinreachusingthecerci. However, they didnotstate whetherthey observed the cerci being used in this manner. Thus,therearenumerousreportsinthe literature suggestingthatjapygoids use their cereal forceps during prey capture, but these reports are not sup- portedbydetailedobservationaldata.Wehaveobservedforcepsbeingused in defensive behavior on several occasions, but never during prey capture. The tenth abdominal segmentandforcepsareheavily sclerotized,musculated,and quite powerful considering the sizeofthe animal.Japygidsunderduress were observed grasping and completely severing the bodies ofother similar sized arthropodsusing the forceps.These animals were neverconsumed duringour observations. Comments.Mixojapyxtridenticulatusisthe only speciesofthisprimarily Mexican genus found in Louisiana. It has the widest distribution of any Mixojapyxspecies north ofMexico, occurring in the gulfcoastal region from east Texas to Florida. The specimens examined from east of the Mississippi Riverdisplay slight,butconsistentchaetotaxic differences from those westof the Mississippi River. Upon further investigation, these two populations may be found to represent distinct species. Knownonlyfromtheabovelocality. Comments.Metajapyxisawidespread genusreported almostexclusively from locations east ofthe Mississippi River (Reddell, 1983). Rathman et al. (1988) reported an undescribed Metajapyx species from eastern Washington State, but some characters needed to confirm the identification were not described.Thus,furtherstudy will be required todetermine itscorrectgeneric placement. Fox (1941) and Smith (1960) reported M. subterraneus from Oregon and Stoddard counties, Missouri, respectively, and these are the only reliablerecordsofthegenuswestofthe MississippiRiver.InLouisiana,speci- mens ofMetajapyxhave only been found east ofthe Mississippi River. Specimensexamined, 1.CaddoParish.Shreve- port, 4634 Dixie Blvd., 12 December 1993, J. T. McBride and V. L. Moseley, habitat: under rottingwoodinurbanbackyard, 1 male. Range. Knownonlyfromtheabovelocality. Comments. The discovery ofthis undescribed genus in an urban habitat wasunexpected. Chaetotaxy,structureofthesubcoxalorgans,andstructureof the cerci suggest that this individual represents a distinct and undescribed genus. Ouachita Highlands of eastern Oklahoma and Arkansas, south to northwestern Louisiana. Comments. Many specimens representing several species in this uncle- scribed genus have been collected by the authors and others from Arkansas and Oklahoma. The individual collected in northern Louisiana may represent the southernmostlimitofthegenus'range.Furtherstudy isunderwaytodeter- mine the numberofspecies in the genus. The only previously published references to Japygoids from Louisianaweremadeby Ingram (1931), Ingrametal. (1950), andFox (1957). ThesespecimenswerereportedonlyasJapyxsp. Ingram(1931)andIngramet al. (1950) reported thatspecimens ofJapyxsp. were commonly found in sug- arcane fields, and suggested that they could be potential pests, causing dam- age by feeding on the root systems ofthe plant.Although we have not exam- ined any specimens collected by Ingram, we agree with Reddell (1983) that these records represent P. isabellae. This species is widespread and common, and is the onlyjapygoid that is commonly collected in agricultural monocul- tures. Parajapyx (Grassjapyx) grassianus "maiusculella" Silvestri. The taxonomic status of the P. grassianus is uncertain. The type locality forP. grassianus is Cordoba, Veracruz, Mexico (Silvestri, 1911) and it has been recorded only from locations in Mexico. Silvestri (1948) sub- sequently described one form, "forma vel mutans", and twovariations ofthat form, "maiusculella" and "robustior", from Florida These descriptions were based primarily oncereal dentation.
