Gaztaiiaga;J.Barriga,M.G.Santos,S.Sarkar ListofParticipants 309 Preface Theinternationalconferenceon"TheLink betweenStars andCosmology"was held in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, on March 26-30, 2001. This was the first event in the spirit ofa new series ofINADE meetings, that intend to address the "New Quests in StellarAstrophysics", providing an important opportunity for international scientists to join and contribute to an up-to-date view of the leading problems in this field of research. A little over 100 participants from 13 countries got together and reviewed, through 57 oral and postercontributions, a variety of topics that spannedfrom solar physics to the properties of the primeval Universe. The headline of this conference was actually to emphasize the emerging interplay between stellar astrophysics and observational cosmology, in a new (and perhaps unusual) approach to the global problem. Thismeetingisnumber21ofarecentbutyetimportantscoreofeventsorganized bytheINADEAstrophysicsDepartmentduring thelastsix years ofitsrenewed scientific activity. These years have coincided with a remarkable growth of scientific research inMexico, where Astrophysics played aleading roleboth in terms ofbasic investigation andtechnological effort (the GTMlLMT,reviewed laterinthis book, will bethe world's largest millimeterradio telescope when it starts operating in 2004 from the VolcanoLa Negra, close to Puebla). The throughput ofthis wide intellectual process has also been palpable in this meeting, whereaboutonethirdoftheparticipantsweregraduateandundergrad uatestudentsfrom allovertheglobe,including7differentMexicaninstitutions, who could attend the conference thanks to a generous funding by INADE,the Universities ofPuebla (BUAP) and Guadalajara (UdeG). Even more encour aging, the role ofthese young scientists has not only been limited to a"silent" and respectful audience, but also most ofthem actively participated presenting fresh results oftheir research. Asidethefruitful discussionandinterchangethatinvolvedparticipants allalong the meeting, we should especially thank allthe invited speakers for spending a relevant effort intheir contributions to give atimely and focused picture ofthe leading problems that link stellar physics and galaxy evolution in the overall context ofhigh-redshift cosmology. xi
