Evenat thetimeofthe firstrevisionofPapuasian taxa(Mansfeld 1925), Meditiillawasalreadyoneofthelargerwoodygenera,withaconspectusof 53species.MerrillandPerry(1943)lateradded16speciesusingakeypatterned onMansfeld.Baker(1916),Ohwi(1913),andBakhuizen(V;43)alsocon- trilouted species from the Wollaston expedition, the Kanehira-Harusima collections,andDutchNewGuinea,respectively.Numerouscontemporary gatheringscannotbeaccommodated by theseearliercontributions, sug- gestmgthatthenumberofundescribedspeciesissubstantial. Ftyiuology. MedniUhisapoi-nrerei/sisisnamed afterthetypelocalityin theLakekamubasin. Medinilhiscipoi-rivereusisisdistinguishedbyitselongateleavesandqua- drangular-alatebranchlets.Othersalientcharactersarethelax,pendulous inHorescenceswithvcrticellatebranching. Innovationsaresetoseatolder nodesandonlycaducouslyplumuloseintheapicaltufts. MedimlUisapoi-riveremhkeysto/\l,icancciMansfeld(Mansfeld1925)but Takeuchi,NewplantsfromPapuasia 1077 thelatterspecieshasaterminalinflorescence.Thereisalsoanapparentaffinity toM. mansfeldianaJVlerrill &Perry,andAl. schlechteriMansfeld. Thenew- speciesdiffersfromM.niamfeldianabythenatureanddensityoftheindtimentum, lengthoftheinflorescence,andsizeofthebracts.FromM.schlechteri,itdiffers inhavingclearlypetiolateleaves,smallerbracts,andesetosecalyces. Trichospennumstevenstiis thusfarknownonly fromlowlandrainforestsofGtilfProvince.Thenewspeciesischaracteristic ofregrowthenvironmentssuchasgaps,landslides,forestmargins,andstirge zonesalongopenstreambeds.Itismostcommonlyseeninassociationwith variousspecieso{Macctrangct^orasaco-dominantinearlyriverinesucces- sions.Nearl—yallsightingswereinsterileconditionduringthesurvey. Thetypecollectionhasbranchletswithappressedstellatescalesratherthan theerecto-patentvestitureonmostPapuasiantaxa. ThebastofTrichosperDninisteveusiiisveryresilient;theentirebarkisstripped insheetsfromthetrunkandtheresultingmatsappliedasflooringbyLakekamu villagers.OtherspeciesofTrichosperiiii/uiarenotedfortheirfibervakie(ibid: 403).
