Egon Diczfalusy was born in Miskolc, Hungary, on 19 September 1920. Eighty years later, it was Egon Diczfa1usy, MD, PhD, DSc(hon.), Dr.h.c.(mult.), FRCOG, FACOG (hon.), Professor emeri tus, Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, who took active part in the work shop. He was accompanied by his wife Ann, their daughter and four sons. The workshop elicited a great interest worldwide; its programme might be understood as a turn-of-the century reflection of the lifework of Diczfalusy, the great communicator. Hence, the workshop covered a very broad area of subjects from the current state of analytics via bio chemistry and physiology, as well as clinical use of sex hormones via family planning and hormone replacement therapy for the human male and female, to a discussion of the new challenge of the new century: a gradual increase in the proportion of elderly people combined with a gradual decrease in the proportion of younger people both in devel oped and developing countries. The manifold scientific presentations and the sometimes (fortu nately) controversial round table discussions were both informative and stimulating. The overwhelming majority of the many outstanding speakers were recruited from Egon's friends and former disciples from all corners of the world. One of them, Prof. Benagiano outlining Egon Diczfalusy's life, described him as one of the last exponents of the past century's remarkable generalists and grand seigneurs. Egon was born VI Preface The participants of the workshop Preface VII with the - in him it is still prevailing - spirit of the old multicultural and multiethnic Austro-Hungarian monarchy. Later, the generously equipped and cosmopolitan Karolinska Institute in Stockholm became the environment of his scientific maturation. Diczfalusy was one of the principal initiators of the Human Reproduction Programme of the World Health Organization some 30 years ago; he was always deeply committed to progress in reproductive endocrinology and was (and still is) profoundly convinced of the necessity of an active and long-lasting scientific support of the Third World. Even today, he is very active as a scientific mentor and reliable friend of a large number of reproductive endocrinologists and clinicians all over the world. He has an unerring eye for what is required in developing countries. He is politically alert and has outstanding organizational skills. It is a particular honour and privilege for us to publish the proceed ings of the workshop in the prestigious series of publications of the Ernst Schering Research Foundation.
