V Victoria Memorial Museum, 1911 vi PREFACE For most of his 15 years in Ottawa Edward Sapir kept an office at the Victoria Memorial Museum Building on Metcalfe and McLeod streets, and it was in this building, during the first three days of October, 1984, tha t the National Museum of Man acted as host to the Edward Sapir Centenary Conference. The present volume contains the proceedings of that conference, whose purpose was both to take stock of Sapir's work and influence in several disciplines from a perspective of nearly half a century after his death, and to provide an opportunity for a wide spectrum of scholars to share information on Sapir as an individual. The conference included not only papers by specialists in ethnology, linguistics, psychology, sociology and museology, but also a roundtable discussion by a number of scholars who knew him personally as a teacher, mentor, or friend, thus providing a personal dimension to the conference which it would otherwise not have had. Soon after the conference the editors decided tha t the order of the published contributions to the volume should follow the sequence of the papers as they were given at the conference itself/ since the papers to some extent work additively, and the roundtable discussion half-way through further served to channel the drift of the conference. The papers appear in the order in which they were given, except that we have placed Professor Eggan's keynote address, which was given on the second day, at the beginning, due to its obvious suitability as an introduction to the entire proceedings. In addition, we have included in the sequence the responses made to each paper and subsequently edited by the discussants themselves. For the interest of future students of Sapir, we note tha t the entire proceedings were filmed on video-tape, which has been archived in the Canadian Ethnology Service of the National Museum of Man in Ottawa. Following the conference, on 28 May 1985, Parks Canada, in cooperation with the National Museum of Man, held a brief *[One paper on the original programme prepared by Dell Hymes has not been included due to the author's plans to publish it elsewhere.] PREFACE ceremony to mark the unveiling of a bronze plaque commem orating Edward Sapir and his contribution to linguistics and anthropology. Some details of this occasion are given in an epilogue to this volume. The National Museum of Man served as the institutional sponsor of the conference and provided major funding. Sub stantial funding was also received from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, the Secretary of State (Native Citizens Directorate), and the Wenner-Gren Founda tion for Anthropological Research. We are grateful to all these agencies for providing the financial support which made the conference possible. A number of individuals contributed to the success of the conference and production of the volume. Very special thanks go to Richard Preston, who worked indefatigably as chairman of the conference programme committee, as well as to the com mittee members: Regna Darnell, Ives Goddard, Victor Golla, Michael Krauss and Michael Silverstein. At the National Mu seum of Man we thank George MacDonald, Michael Carroll and Beatrice Emery for smoothing the administrative path and helping with local arrangements; Sandra Gibb and Judy Hall for their assistance in preparing a display of Sapiriana for the conference; and Louise Dallaire and Dennis Fletcher for archival assistance. We are also grateful to Lynn Legate of the Ottawa Public Library for her assistance in research on Sapir's life in Ottawa, and for helping to provide letters from Sapir and other archival material in possession of the Ottawa Public Library for the display of Sapiriana. We are, finally, especially indebted to Christina Thiele of Carleton University for her expert editorial assistance in the preparation of this volume, and for her monumental effort in the computerized typesetting of the final result.
