Sincethecarabidfauna ofthismountainrangehasnot been intensivelyinvestigatedasyet, our knowledgeis nomorethanfragmentaryevenonthecomparativelywell-knowngeneraCa1abus(s. lat )and (:),(・h/・11s. Recently, Ihadanopportunitytoexaminealongseriesofexampleso「carabid beetlescollectedfromseveral localitiesontheQinlingMountainsincludingratherhigh altitudinal areas. Thecollectioncontainssomeunnamed formsofthegeneraCal・abus (s lat )andC、、、(/11'its,and I amgoingtodescribeeightnewtaxainthepresentpaper. Theabbreviationsemployedhereinarethesameasthoseexplainedinmypre- viouspapers,andtheho1otypesofallthenewlydescribedtaxaarepreservedinthecol- lectionoftheDepartmentofZoology, NationalScienceMuseum(Nat.Hist ), Tokyo, andtheparatypesaredepositedinmycollection. OnlyonespeciesbelongingtoR/1lgo(・al・abus,c/foulDEuvE(1989、p 228), hashithertobeen known from the QinlingMountains, and the present new species becomesasecondrepresentativeof thesubgenusoccurringonthismountainrange. Although l knowDEuvE'sspeciesonlyfrom theoriginal description, the twospecies 、eemtobereadilydiscriminated fromeachotherbydifferentlyshapedaedeagus. Thepresent newspeciesisalsocomparablewith C (」R) to、loensls, recentlydo- s.cribed by DEuvE(1992, p 54) fromGansu, but isdiscriminated from thelatter by having thegularsetaeand thedifferentlyshaped aedeagus. Position of the hairless depressionson theventral surface of male antennae and thesculptural conditions ofpronotumandelytraarealsodiagnostic. Zhubajleisthenameof asensualmonsterpigappearingasoneofthethree fol- lowersofTangsenginthestoryofXiyouji. 2. Ca,abus(Hypsocarabus)latroqinlingensl'sIMuRA,sp nov. (Figs 2,8) Length:17.0-l9.0mm(fromapicalmarginofclypeustoapicesofelytra). Most closelyallied to the nominotypica1subspeciesof Cal・abus ( 、,pso(a・/abus) titleSEMENow (1898, p367) described from ''Lun-ngan-fu'' (=Pingwu at present, situatedatthenorthernendofSichuanneartheGansuborders), but differsfromit in the following respects: dorsalsurfacereddishcoppery, sometimeswith red-purplish lustre. while it is much darker in the nominotypical subspecies; apical margin of labrummoredeeplyemarginate; penultimatesegmentoflabial palpususuallybearing Figs 7-12. Notes. This is presumably the most specialised subspecies of Ca,・abus /at,・o characterisedbylossor atrophyofsuchcharactersasgularsetae, ostium lobeand right basal lobeofendopha1lusofmalegenitalia, whichare reserved inall theother subspecieshithertoknown. Bothpronotumand aedeagusof the present subspecjes areconsiderablydifferentinshapefromthoseoftheothers. Inaddition,itistheunjque characteristicoftheQinIingsubspeciestohaveinhighratiotheadditionalsetaeonthe distalpartofpenultimatesegmentof labial palpus. It ispossiblethatthisraceisdis- tinctspecificallyfromtheSichuaneseones,buthereIprovisionallydescribeitasasub_ speciesof thelatter. Ca●abus(Tomocal'abus)sltahes/lang IMURA,sp nov (Figs 3,9) Length: 14.8-16.6mm(fromapicalmarginofclypeustoapicesofelytra). Black, mat, except for mandiblesand tarsi which are reddish brown. Buccal appendagesand antennae also reddishbrownespecially in thebasal part of each segment. ItmayalsobecomparablewithC.(T)s/1aa,1.xle,IsisrecentlydescribedbyDEUvE (l991,P ie5) from ''AnkangXian'' situatedinthesouthernmost part ofShaanxj Provincenear theSichuanand theHubei borders. SincetheAnkang xianspecjes was described on the basis of a single female specimen without accompanying illustrations,carefulconsiderationisnecessarytodetermineitstruetaxonomjcposjtjon. Judgingfromtheoriginaldescription,however, theQinIingspeciesseemstobedjs_ criminatedfromtheAnkangXianoneatleastbythefollowingfivecharacters:1)sjze alittlesmaller;2)penultimatesegmentoflabialpalpusalwayswithtwosetae, whjlejt istrisetoseinthelatter;3)antennaelonger,reachingbasalquarterofelytrainfemale, whiletheyreachbasalone-sixthsinthelatter;4)pronotumwithfivetosixmargjna1 Setae,whereasitbearsthreeorfour inthelatter;5)sternalsulci prominentlycarved, thoughfinelysointhelatter. Thenameofthisnewspecies,s/1aheshang,comesfromthatofawaterspritewho (、:al・a/)111.・and C、,(,1/1-ll.l,fromtheQinlingMountains 371 appearsasoneofthethreefollowersofTangsenginthestoryofXiyouj 4. Carabus(Pagocarabus)crassescldpt1ʻsquntlI'ngicolo'' IMURA,subsp nov. (Figs 4,10) Length:21.8-26.0mm(fromapicalmarginofclypeustoapicesofelytra). Closely allied to subsp. ・,ugoslsslnnlsBREUNING (l943, p ile)'' described from 'Pelting-Chan'' (thenameof amountainrangestreching from west to east between MinshanandQinling, at thesouthernendof Gansu), anddoubtlessbelongsto the samesubspecies-group, but distinguished fromit by the following respects: dorsal surface more light bluish and not so stronglypurplish as in ・/ugoslsslmus; pronotum slenderer,withthesidesmoreweaklyroundedinfront, andhindanglesmoresharply pointed,elytral intervalsmoreweakly raised, with theelevated partsless frequently fused with one another: preapica1emargination of elytrashallower: aedeagusmore strongly tumid bilateradalittlebeforethemiddle, with theapical lobeslenderer and morestronglyarcuateventrad. All fromtheQinIingMoun- tains inShaanxi Province, Central China. Notes. This new subspecies is named after its unique coloration, ''Qunqing'', whichmeanspurplishblueinChinese. I,' 5. Distinguishedfromthenominotypica1subspeciesbythefollowingcharacters: the secondantennalsegmentobviouslyshorterthanthefourth,thoughtheformerislonger than thelatter in thenominotypicalsubspecies, pronotuma littleslenderer (PW/PL 1.26-1.42, M I 33, whileitIs l 47in thenominotypicalsubspecies); eIytra1sculpture nottypicallytriploidasinthenominotypica1subspecies,butis regardedtobepenta- or heptap1oid, i.e., tertiariesnot clearly recognisableasasinglerowo「granules, but usuallysplit intothreeto fiveirregularlyset rowsofgranules. Judging mainly fromclosesimilarity intheconformation ofgenitalia, BREuNINc's speciesisconsideredtobealocal raceofC.('1'asses('ll//1tlsKRAAlz, thoughratherpeculiarinexternal features.
