Soft Trees isthe tile ofa gloss poem by PK. Page, poem which blends iself with the following text
‘by Toronto poet Dionne Brand:“some words can make you weep, when they'e uttered, the light rp of

Murmur is sbove the period of night when one’ surroundings becomes eerily quiet. The concept for
“Murmur ame about daring alate night, while working alone in my apartment. The nose from the street
had grown quiet, nd I became finely attuned to the silence, and sense of space around the silence. was
highly awate ofthe minutia of very quiet noises around me: the click of the furnace the neighbours’ vices
riled sound through the wall, the ca’ reathing, and the creas of my old building. This composition
tempt to evoke tis experience by uizing small collections of pitches chat are slowly altered to subdy
‘change the harmonic structure of the piece it unfolds, and by employing the unique timbral and
textual posites ofthe string orchestra. This piece was writen in October 2009 for The Canadian
‘Contemporary Music Workshop, and is dedicated tothe memory of Cecilia Gorsuch (1913-2009).
