This was a rush. Mark and I undertook this book on a short schedule, figuring we could easily swing it, with only twenty breweries and a relatively small area to cover. Let me tell you: New Jersey’s small, but it’s action-packed. First, thanks go to my partner, Mark Haynie. Mark did a lot of the brewery legwork on this book, and he took my criticisms and suggestions on his writing with his customary endearing cheerfulness. He taught me a few things about enthusiasm and adaptability too. Nice work, Mark; I could not have done this one without you. Thanks again to Kyle Weaver, my editor at Stackpole, who asked me for two years, “How about that New Jersey book?” Points for persis- tence, Kyle, and patience too. I’d also like to thank those intrepid folks who keep the torch of beer appreciation burning: the bar owners, retailers, and specialty whole- salers. Supporting beer variety in New Jersey has been a tough haul, but you folks are up to the job. My gratitude as well to the folks who helped us find the best in the Garden State. That’s the users who keep things up-to-date on two first- class beer websites: BeerAdvocate.com and Pubcrawler.com. Thanks for some excellent tips; I wouldn’t have found Tierney’s without you. Two very good friends of mine in New Jersey, Mike Gates and Rich Pawlak, have dragged me around to some top-notch places for food and beer; that was a great night at the Jug Handle, guys. Special thanks to Bruce Springsteen, Southside Johnny, and John Gorka, who filled my car with appropriate tunes as I cruised around the state, trying not to get lost “somewhere in the swamps of Jersey.” My father, Lew, gave me unfailing map support, as usual. My chil- dren, Thomas and Nora, take everything in stride—latchkey afternoons, late dinners, bottles and growlers all over the house—and always wel- come me home. And as ever, my wife, Catherine, made it all possible. I can never thank her enough. To all of you, cheers! LB ix
