New German Filmmakers New German Filmmakers Edited by Klaus Phillips From Oberhausen in 1962 came the mes¬ sage: “The old cinema is dead. We believe in the new.” It was the challenge of twenty-six young filmmakers, frustrated by the sorry state of film production in the Federal Repub¬ lic of Germany. Some twenty years later much of the “Oberhausen Manifesto” has become reality, even as much remains unfulfilled. German feature films are in¬ creasingly presented in American com¬ mercial theatres and shown on college campuses. How did this impressive transformation take place? New German Filmmakers explores these twenty years of achievement as it concentrates on the work of twenty-one filmmakers —directors whose films con¬ vey a sense of the forces that shaped the new German cinema and brought it to in¬ ternational prominence. Such familiar names as Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Werner Herzog, and Wim Wenders are here, along with some not so well known, among them Reinhard Hauff, Peter Lilienthal, and Jean-Marie Straub, and others largely unknown. All articles were written expressly for this work by spe¬ cialists in the German film. continued on back flap Digitized by the Internet Archive in 2019 with funding from Kahle/Austin Foundation https://archive.org/details/newgermanfilmmakOOOOunse NEW GERMAN FILMMAKERS UNGAR FILM LIBRARY Selected Listing Academy Awards: An Ungar Reference Index, Second Edition, updated Edited by Richard Shale American History I American Film: Interpreting the Hollywood Image Edited by John E.
