New Ergonomics Perspective represents a selection of Editor: the papers presented at the 10th Pan-Pacifi c Conference on Yamamoto Ergonomics (PPCOE), held in Tokyo, Japan, August 25-28, Ergonomics 2014. Ergonomics Co-editors: The fi rst Pan-Pacifi c Conference on Occupational Ergonomics Shibuya was held in 1990 at the University of Occupational and Izumi Ergonomi Environmental Health, Japan. The main theme of the Ergonomi New Ergonomics Shih PPCOE 1990 was “Searching for Solutions to Occupational Lin Problems.” The successful meetings have taken place in 1990 (Kitakyushu, Japan), 1992 (Wuhan, China), 1994 (Seoul, Lim Ergonomie Korea), 1996 (Taipei, Taiwan), 1998 (Kitakyushu, Japan), 2001 Ergonomie Perspective (Beijing, China), 2004 (Cairns, Australia), 2007 (Bangkok, Thailand) and 2010 (Kaohsiung, Taiwan). After two decades P N of collective endeavors, the conferences have established e e globally recognized excellence in scientifi c and professional r contributions. w s Now, PPCOE activities are entering a new stage after a quarter p century of history. Fortunately, participants of the PPCOE E Ergonomía e Ergonomía Final in Tokyo are eager to take a fi rst step on the road to its c r rebirth: the establishment of a new, mature PPCOE. g t i o v n PPCOE pursues ergonomics as a practical science, covering e o a broad spectrum of up-to-date and comprehensive ergonomics issues. This book was organized into six m thematic chapters, including Aging and Occupational i Safety, Workplace Ergonomics, Occupational Ergonomics, c Healthcare and Special Populations, Human Computer s Interaction and Current Issues and Ergonomics Approach. About 80 researchers from eight countries participated and 80 papers were presented. This book is composed of a selection of papers chosen by the PPCOE2014 Program Committee. You may be aware that this PPCOE (Pan Pacific Conference on Ergonomics) 2014 confer- ence celebrates the 10th occasion that the meeting is held in a time span of 20 years. Our society, and the research fields covered, have changed considerably in these past 20 years. Firstly, caused by the development of ICT (Information and Communication Technol- ogy), i.e. the internet and various Social Networking Systems (SNS). These technology devel- opments have changed the way of working as well as the production systems. The second reason is a social situation, caused by the transition from an aged society to an aging soci- ety. That means that research on how to educate the younger generation for communicating the know-how of older workers becomes necessary. Researchers must investigate support methods and the environment for the elderly further, and development and evaluation of the assistive technology for elderly people becomes necessary. These changes have an impact on our research scopes and themes. This 10th conference is a milestone as our research fields are developing now. If we understand this fact, we will know that it is essential to re-evaluate our research aims and scope. This meeting will provide a platform and a place to consider how to change to go into this new direction. I would like to thank Emeritus Prof. Masaharu Kumashiro, the president of PPCOE, who gave me the opportunity to convene this conference. Also, I would like to acknowledge the help of Professor Masahiro Shibuya as secretary general of the PPCOE 2014 conference. Finally, a word of thanks to all participants. Prof. Sakae Yamamoto, Ph.D. Chair of the Pan Pacific Conference on Ergonomics (PPCOE) 2014 The president of the Society for Occupational Safety, Health and Ergonomics (SOSHE) ix PPPPCCOOEE__BBooookk..iinnddbb iixx 1111//2299//22001144 1100::4422::2244 AAMM
