Nonehadanychildrenclosetomyage.Thiswasintheearly1940'sduring WWII andthepostdepression,aneraofscarcesuppliesandwhenpenniescounted. Mypreschoolyearsandbeyondhad meresponsibleforraisingandcaringforour300-500chickens. Partofthatwould includethe longwalkstodeliverandsell theeggsgoingdoortodoor.Thisexperiencewouldhavea pronounced influenceon mylife. Alongwiththeeggs, Icarrieda padofpaperandawell-usedpencil inmypocket. Iwould periodicallystoptosketch theponds,ducks,woods, barns, housesorneighborsintheirvaryingactivities.Atnight, Iwoulddrawthewartime leaders' portraitsoreventsthatcouldbefound inthefrontpageofthenewspaper. Duringthesepreschoolyears, Iwasunhappythat someofmydrawingsdidn'tlookquiteright,yetI didn'tknowhowtofixthem. Bysavingsomeofthem, Ithought,asIgot older, Icould learnhowtocorrectmyearliermistakes.Thus,atthattimeI putthemawayina portfolio,which Isubsequentlycarriedwithme wherever went,tobeusedasafuturereference. I Myneighborswereawareofmydrawing habits. Before longwhiledeliveringtheeggs, Ifoundmyselfbeing invited inforasnackandagoodtalk. Afewneighborshad purchasedpaintandotherartsuppliesformyuse,whichtheykeptattheirhouse.Theyencouragedmetostayawhileand paint. Ithoughtitwasaterrificideawhilealsobeingabletogetawayfrommychoresforawhile.All I hadtodowastopainta pictureofwhateverthey requested. Fromtheageoffivetonineyearsthiscontinuedalmostonadailybasis includingmyafternoonsafterschool. Myneighbors' understanding, companionship,andnurturingofmysoulandartistictendencieswasmostinstrumental inmymaturation. However,theterribleinhumanityofwarandthesufferingofpeoplefrom illnessesdeeplydisturbedme.Therewasanoverwhelmingneedwithin metofindawaytohelpothers. Notlongthereafter, myfamilywenttovisitmyunclewhohadjustreturnedfromfiveyearsoverseasasawartime physician. Asweall satdowntodinner,thephonerang. Itwasthehospital callingformyuncletoimmediatelyattendacriticallyill patient. Even though Iwouldhavetowaitforhim inthecar, I beggedtogowithhim.WhenmyunclereturnedtothecarIasked, "didyou helpthepatient?" He answered,yes. Ithenasked "will helive?"Again, heansweredyes.AtthatpointI knewIwantedtobecomea physiciantobethereforothers. When IcamehomefromtheVietnamconflictasa physician, Iwasgivenawrappedpackage,bymyfather. OfallthevariousjobsIhavehadtheoneI likebestwasteachingvisualartintheHighSchoolsetting.Thisteachingpositionallowedmetoresumemy watercolorpainting. Mystudentsweretalented,interestingandexcitingtobearound. Someofthesestudentshavegoneontosuccessfulartcareersand Istillhearfromformerstudentswhoarenotkidsanymore. I InadditiontoHighSchoolart, Ihavetaughtwatercolorpaintingclassesprivatelyandheldworkshops.AlongthewayIhavebeenfortunatetowin manyprizesinlocalandnationalshows. Myfavoriteandmostusedpigmentsevolvedfromher palette.SinceIthoughtIwantedtopaintfromnature, Istudied FerdinandPetrie'sworkin"Painting NatureinWatercolor".Theseearlystudiesandmany bookssincehavebeenstronginfluences.WorkshopsundertheguidanceofPaulGeorgeandJohnSalminenwereinvaluabletomeforthethoughtful criticismandencouragementtheyoffered.IcontinuetolearnimportantlessonsfromtheworksofmyfellowartistsoftheNewEnglandWatercolor Society.
