The Globe Bank of Providence, RI, was incorporated in 1831 as the fiscal agent for the New York and Stonington RR Company. In 1865, it received Federal charter #1126 and became the National Globe Bank. The bank was liquidated in 1899. It was during the years as a note issuing state bank that such a curiosity as shown here was emitted. The state bank note era in the United States (1860-1865) spawned thousands of paper money designs, from simple portraits to complex historical battle scenes. This allegorical' engraving depicts Knowledge and Father Time flanking the mighty Atlas who is supporting the globe of Earth on which rest the Continents of the World. The signs of the Zodiac also appear on a belt surrounding the Globe. Bank notes with unusual designs such as this are highly prized by collectors. Dr. Jan Dyroff designed this year’s medal. The Maine sank after a mysterious explosion in the harbor at Havana, Cuba on February 15, 1898. The cause of the explosion was never established, but the event led to declarations of war by Spain and the United States in late April 1898. By the end of July the United States had won the war, and Spain sued for peace. In the final settlement, Spain ceded Cuba, the island of Guam, the Philippines and Puerto Rico to the United States.
