PRESIDENT: ROBERT F. FRITSCH P.O. Bon 3003 Nashua, NH 03061-3003 Welcome to NENA's 53rd Annual Conference and Convention! We have set up a great show for you -- a huge bourse, educational speakers, exhibits, a YN Program, the What-Is-It? Table, an elongating booth, and much, much more. We are glad you could join us. Enjoy! Robert F. Fritsch President 1997 NENA 53rd CONVENTION SOUVENIR SHEET Cnglanb J^umismatic Association, 3lnc. 53rd Conference and Convention August 22 &231997 MarCBorovgh, This attractive example of a state-chartered private bank issue of the Claremont Bank is typical of the paper money that circulated in New Hampshire during the state bank note era. Collectors with an appreciation for fine art will observe that the left-hand vignette titled, "Shoeing the Bay Mare", was copied from a painting by the famous British artist, Sir Edwin Landseer. Since "good faith" was the only backing for paper money issued by private banks, the holder of these notes had to trust the solvency and the honesty of the issuers. Therefore, as these notes circulated farther and farther from the bank issue, it was not uncommon to see them being more deeply discounted by those who did not know of the bank's reputation. It is a tribute to the New Hampshire banking industry that very few of the state's banks failed to honor their financial obligations.
