It will start with simplified one-group diffusion theory models and extend into sophisticated multigroup transport theory models. Each chapter will have at least one example covering the issues discussed. Desktop calculationswillbediscussedanddemonstratedinexamples.Asmallone-dimen- sional computer code will be provided to demonstrate the models discussed. Resonancetheory, thermalscattering, andheterogeneouseffectswillbediscussed andcharacterized.Detaileddatasetswillbeprovided thatwillallow two-,three-, and four-group desktop calculations. Additional multigroup data sets will be pro- videdwiththecomputerdisk. The second half of the book will deal with the two main topics of interest to operatingreactors—reactorkinetics/dynamicsandin-corefuelmanagement.Based onthefundamentalphysicsdiscussedinthefirsthalfofthebook, reactivitymodels will be developed using realistic reactor cross-sectional data and modern analytic tools.Adjointmethodswillbeexplainedindetail.Perturbationtheorywillbeused extensivelytoquantifyreactivityeffects.Bothlinearandnonlinearreactorkinetic feedback models are included. Control system models will be mainly based on linearization techniques. Fuel management analysis will be based on a linear reactivitymodel.Codemodelingwillbediscussedandexampleproblemsincluded that can be addressed with desktop methods. The theory for extending fuel man- agementcalculationstomodernlarge-scalecomputerswillbediscussed. Some sections and chapters of the book reflect input from the lecture notes of Professor Emeritus William J. Garland, Department of Engineering Physics, McMaster University, Professor Hiroshi Sekimoto of Tokyo Institute of Technol- ogy, andProfessorH.VanDamofDelftUniversityofTechnology, aswellassome of my own lectures and notes while consulting with the Department of Energy. Many thanksalsogo toDr.StanleyThompsonofOregon State Universityand his research notes on topics of “unstable nuclear power,” which was available on theInternet. Itisanticipatedthatthefirsthalfofthebookwillbeusefultomanyprofessionals in the nuclear industry. The second half of the book should be of use to nuclear engineeringprofessionalsconcernedwithoperatingnuclearreactors.
