It is published quarterly and mailed to all members of the association in good standing. For information about NENA of this publication, write to: NENA NEWS, P.O. Box 920586, Needham, MA 02192-0007 PRESIDENT’S COMMENTS Bob Hewey Our 57th Convention and Annual Meeting, held in con¬ junction with the Bay State Coin Show on March 24, 2001, was a success! The Boston location was not a de¬ terrent to an excellent turnout. Parking at the hotel was easy and less expensive than expected ($16 for all day on Saturday). There was a wonderfully varied bourse to meet virtually every collector’s need. Ten new members were added to NENA’s rolls. But the event was not without it’s disappointments, too. While the YN Program was fairly well attended, the turnout for the adult speakers and pro¬ grams and our annual meeting was meager at best. Also, only three exhibits were presented. We believe that edu¬ cation is the key to lull enjoyment of any hobby and nu¬ mismatics is no exception. If you have ideas on how to increase participation I’d appreciate hearing from you. Special thanks are in order for all who helped make this event a success, including: Bob Anderson - Medal Coordinator, Raffle Coordinator and Treasurer, George Bilodeau, Jr. - Exhibits Consultant and Love Token Soci¬ ety Speaker, Joe Duval - Communications Coordinator, Bob Fritsch - “What’s It” Table Coordinator, Jack Har- oian - YN Program Coordintor, Frank Hoerzer - Exhibit Coordinator, Jack Kiley - Display Case Coordinator (and Friday ticket seller). Rich Lavimodiere (Welcomer and ticket/souvenir sales) and Bill Stone - Secretary and Budget Development. Additional thanks go to Bob Kvederas, Sr. for his talk on “Interesting Pairs in U.S. Pa¬ per Money,” Gail Baker, ANA Education Director for her presence and presentation on ANA Educational Seminars and Scott Travers for his entertaining and informative talk. 4 Special mention must also go to Tom Caldwell, on behalf of Northeast Numismatics, for his donation of our Raffle Grand Prize (an Unc. St. Gaudens $20 Gold Piece) and Ed Aleo and his family for their running an excellent bourse and providing NENA with meeting facilities and AV equipment and $500 stipend. This was the first time in my three annual meetings as your President that the Jack and Mary Mullen Presi¬ dent’s Service Award was given. It was my feeling that there should be two such awards this year. The first was for the contributions of Larry Gentile. For the first time in 25+ years, Larry was unable, due to his health, to coordinate our YN Program at our Annual Meeting. The YN Program has been one of NENA’s most important aspects. It helps to create tomorrow’s numist- matists. While Jack Haroian did an able job this year, Larry’s presence was missed and his work over the years is very appreciated. As a wonderful bonus, Larry’s name was drawn as our Grand Prize winner in the Raffle. Con¬ gratulations! The second award goes to Arthur M. Fitts, III. Arthur is currently the ANA Historian and has sponsored NENA members to ANA seminars. By his own account, he is NENA’s first Life Member and has served as a director on the NENA board. But, according to Jack Kiley, his most important contribution to NENA has been the storing of our display cases over these many years! Congratulations and thanks for your many contributions to numismatics. While most of the officers elected were incumbents, we welcome one new member to the NENA Board: Ernie Botte as Director-at-large. He has many new ideas to of¬ fer, including getting NENA on the internet! Jan Dyroff stepped down after many years of service on the Board 5 due to increasing personal commitments. Thanks for your past support, Jan. We will also be replacing our long time NENA News Editor, Bill Jones, who is stepping down after many years in this role. Thanks so much for your efforts as both editor and contributor to the NENA News. We welcome Joe Duval as the new NENA News Editor. Please support him with your contributions. He may be reached by mail at P.O. Box 28, Willimantic, CT 06226 or via email at <[email protected]>. Prior to that the most commonly used campaign items were the die struck medalets. Andrew Jackson’s campaign issued the first medalets in 1824. After that medalets be¬ came a regular feature of presidential campaigns although very few pieces were issued for some elections. The rarest pieces were issued during James K. Polk’s 1844 campaign. That year the Democrats declared that campaign trinkets were an insult to the voters’ intelli¬ gence. Few items were issued during Lewis Cass’ cam¬ paign in 1848. After Cass lost the Democrats decided that limiting the issuance of campaign paraphernalia wasn’t such a good idea after all. 10
